The idea of ‘insert tripod legs here’ is something of a joke in the landscape photography community, which is used when discussing popular locations where most photographers essentially take the same shot. Some of these places are one-trick ponies where there’s just one viewpoint that provides an image, while others provide greater scope for finding more varied compositions. Knowing how to read a map and use a compass is essential for anyone enjoying the outdoors. In more remote locations – mountains especially – it’s always recommended that you carry a paper map and compass, even if you’re using a GPS-based map app on your phone, because if weather conditions take a turn for the worse and you can’t use GPS, a traditional map and compass, along with the ability to use them, can be a lifesaver. 15 HOURS If you’re capturing a fast-moving object, you normally have three options. You can use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action; a slow shutter speed to create wisps of abstract motion; or the panning technique to capture pin-sharp subjects and lashings of motion blur. But there is another approach you can take, called sequence photography. This creative method involves stitching together a series of images that depict a subject as it moves through the frame. As you can see from our dazzling kingfisher, sequence photography is a great technique to use when capturing birds in flight. Consistent framing is crucial, so we’d recommend using a tripod. There are almost enough dedicated vlogging cameras for every YouTuber to have their own dedicated model, but the latest addition to the field, the Panasonic G100, brings something new to the table that will be of particular interest to vloggers and YouTubers: some nifty voice-tracking audio. The combination of three internal microphones and Nokia’s Ozo tech, which we’ve already seen in smartphones like the OnePlus 8 Pro, means the Panasonic G100 can pull off spatial audio tricks like tracking voices throughout a scene. It also cleverly works in tandem with the G100’s face recognition. Two of the best online sources of maps and satellite views of very restricted areas of the Earth are OS Maps online in Britain and Google Maps. There are, of course, other mapping sites available, but these two are the most popular, and for good reason. These services can provide a wealth of detailed visual information that enables you to do a ‘virtual recce’ of locations before visiting, and help you find features in the landscape that may act as focal points in your landscape shots. Photoshop’s healing tools let you cover up distracting details in your photos, so they’re handy for all kinds of image enhancements, from removing spots, pimples and blemishes on a subject’s skin to removing unwanted figures or objects from a scene. Variety is the spice of life, and landscape photography is certainly no exception. Most landscape photographers are lovers of the great outdoors, and visiting new locations is part of the enjoyment. From the best-known honeypot locations, photographed millions of times before and easily researched in photography location guidebooks, to virtually unknown locations that can be discovered in various ways, the world is brimming with amazing places that are just waiting to be photographed. Whether you’re visiting a well-known location or one you’ve discovered on a map for the first time, it’s worth doing a recce beforehand in the middle of the day, when the light isn’t favourable. The advantage of this is that you won’t be preoccupied with shooting, so you can use your time more efficiently – but of course you may get lucky and be able to bag some shots while you’re there. Finding a location for the first time in the dark, or returning to your car in the dark can be a challenge in itself. This can be avoided with a mid-day recce. The winners of the 2020 Creative Photo Awards have been revealed. The competition has 16 categories in which photographers can submit images, including Conceptual, Nature & Landscape, Nudes and Fashion. Professional and amateur photographers from more than 100 countries submitted over 24,000 photos to the competition. The overall winner was Hardijanto Budiman from Indonesia, who scooped the Photo of the Year 2020 title with his remarkable stylised image of table tennis players wearing motorcycle helmets. Budiman said: “Ping pong is my favourite sport. When I was young I used to be a ping pong player in my home town club.
