The landscape genre is a brilliant photographic avenue to explore, and with lockdown restrictions being eased around the globe it’s a great time to get out there and expand your portfolio. The UK is full of scenic mountains, forests, gardens, and coasts that are never far away, and most countries are spoilt for choice when it comes to stunning vistas. All these locations make for strong photos whether they’re dappled in sunlight or drenched in a torrential downpour, enabling you to capture memorable images all year round. Lead-in lines, also called leading lines, are so called because they lead the eye in towards a point in your picture. If placed carefully, they can gently guide the viewer’s eye towards a specific point in the landscape that you want to be the focus for your shot, such as a tree or structure that will anchor the image. They’re a handy framing device that you should always consider when shooting your landscapes, and it’s often worth having a look around to see if there are lines in natural formations that you can use, such as the coastline in this image, or man-made structures like paths or fence posts – you’ll be surprised at what you can use to lead the eye into an image when you start getting creative.…

Pressing the shutter button on your camera is rarely the end of the creative process, as these days we have so much choice when it comes to editing programs, and the tools that enable us to polish our images. Among other things, there are a whole host of tweaks you can make to your shots to get the composition spot-on. Of course, it’s preferable to get this as close to perfect in-camera where possible, but we’re going to show you some adjustments that can help to make an already great photo even better. Wildlife photographer George Logan has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a photography book to raise money for lion conservation projects in Africa. All proceeds from Lion: Pride Before The Fall will go to support the Pride of Meru initiative, a project of The Born Free Foundation, which aims to conserve and protect lions in Kenya’s Meru Conservation Area. The book will feature 176 pages of lion photos and conceptual art that highlights the dangers wild lions face. Logan said: “This work, the culmination of over 10 years following and photographing Africa’s lion prides, brings their dramatic narrative to life in all its natural beauty and raw ferocity.” Born Free founder Virginia McKenna OBE, who will write the foreword to the book, said: “This remarkable book opens our eyes and…

There are two big attractions in moving up from a crop-sensor camera to a full-frame system. First up, depth of field is more dependent on actual focal length, rather than the ‘effective’ focal length with a crop factor applied; the upshot is that you can get a tighter depth of field to blur backgrounds and make the main part of a scene stand out, ideal for portraiture and still lifes. The other big bonus is that, if you stick to a modest megapixel count, the photosites (equating to pixels) on a full-frame image sensor are likely to be significantly larger than those on an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds sensor. Canon has offically launched its new flagship mirrorless camera, the EOS R5 – and there’s far more to this game-changing camera than just its headline 8K capabilities. The R5 has a spec sheet to drool over, starting with its 45-megapixel full-frame sensor, which Canon says is its highest-resolving sensor ever, even better than the sensor on the 50.6MP EOS 5DS / R. That’s due to the same low-pass filter design featured in the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, which the manufacturer claims reaches new resolution heights. Since the dawn of photography artists have been experimenting with different compositions. Over the past few centuries, however, we’ve come to accept some basic fundamental rules that you should employ if you’re struggling to get a decent composition of the scene in front of you. Many of these compositional tricks have been borrowed from the visual mediums of painting and drawing, and are seen as easily transferable to photography. You’ll have likely heard of the rule of thirds, and it’s one of the classic compositional approaches that we’ll explore in more depth here. Perspective is a huge factor in composition that’s often overlooked. It’s all to do with what you include in the frame, the spacing between objects or your foreground and background, and how high the camera is elevated. Many of the pictures we take are shot at head height, but simply crouching down or reaching up can change your perspective massively. Many cameras now feature articulating LCD screens, making it much easier to compose images at these awkward angles, and it’s a simple and quick way of giving your shots a completely different look. A simple change of shooting height can also make your subject look more or less dominant in the frame by introducing a high or low angle, which alters the mood of the image. Sony has announced the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM, which it sayus is “the world’s widest f/2.8 zoom”. Until, now the widest G Master lens was the FE 16-35mm f/2.8, but the new 12-24mm is substantially wider, and aimed at photographers shooting astrophotography, architecture, landscapes and any other scenario requiring an ultra-wide angle of view. Sony’s G Master lenses use the company’s ultra-high-tolerance XA (‘extreme aspherical’) lens elements. Previous G Master lenses have used one or two of these, but the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM has three, including the largest XA element yet made as the front element. It would be easy to think that when you take a picture you’re completely in control of how the landscape will appear in the frame, but in many ways you’re locked into a predetermined aspect ratio. This could be the aspect ratio of your camera, or the aspect ratios of typical print sizes, although of course these are generally pretty similar. Your camera’s aspect ratio is determined by the design and size of the electronic sensor inside the camera body. An aspect ratio of 3:2 is pretty standard in digital photography, and it’s a popular print ratio too, but some camera manufacturers, such as Olympus and Panasonic, implement different aspect ratios, as their native images come out at 4:3, so your composition would need a different approach than if you…
