1 HOUR Bokeh derives from the Japanese word ‘boke’, which means blur, and it’s used to describe the quality of the out-of-focus specular highlights you see time and time again in images, such as portraits or still lifes. Bokeh is often achieved by focusing on a subject that’s separated from a concentrated light source (like a string of LED lights). By shooting at a wide aperture to create a shallow depth of field, the lights in the background are rendered as attractive glowing shapes. Narrower apertures are still capable of capturing bokeh, but the super-wide apertures of fast lenses are known for producing the creamy depths of field that create these attractive specs of blur most effectively. Nikon has officially announced the Nikon Z5, and as rumored it’s a 24.3MP full-frame camera that sits between the Z50 and Z6, possesses dual memory card slots, and comes with a brand-new kit lens. While the Z5 possesses a sensor with a similar pixel count to the 24.5MP affair on the Nikon Z6, it’s actually new and non-back-illuminated – and, of course, it exceeds the 20.9MP APS-C sensor in the Nikon Z50 in size as well as in the number of megapixels. Although the sensor may be different, the Z5 takes many cues from the Z6, such as the 273-point hybrid AF system (which incorporates animal AF), five-axis in-body image stabilisation, a sensitivity range of ISO100-51200, and 3690k-dot electronic viewfinder. Wide-angle lenses are generally accepted to be optics with a focal length of less than approximately 40mm, and today they cover everything down to 10mm for APS-C camera models and around 12mm for full-frame sensors. These are the optics of choice for professional landscape and travel photographers, but they find a use in a much greater range of shooting scenarios, from environmental portraiture to sports. In some respects, it’s in this range of optics that naming conventions have the most potential to confuse buyers. One of the main difficulties with lenses as the tools of our trade is that they’re made up of many advanced optical and electrical technologies, which we can’t easily gain access to, let alone tinker with. They’re complex bits of kit, and while there are some technical malfunctions the causes of which we can easily diagnose ourselves, and potentially even fix, many are either beyond our capabilities or best left to trained professionals – for warranty validation reasons if nothing else. 1 BLACK CARD Thick black paper will help prevent light leaks, and is what you’ll need to create a DIY aperture disc. We’ve settled on a heart, but the aperture can be any shape you wish. When placed in front of your lens and used with a wide-open aperture, it’ll transform the bokeh into your chosen shape. 2 CRAFT UTENSILS You’ll need a pencil to draw around your lens and mark out a template on the black card, which then needs to be cut out. We’d recommend using sticky tape to fix the card components together, so that your aperture disc stays securely in one piece when you’re out and about shooting. 3 TAPE MEASURE It’s important that your aperture shape is placed directly in the centre of the disc.…

In this video tutorial we’ll show you how to combine a variety of images from difference sources to create an engaging and slightly surreal fantasy-themed composite image. We’ll be using all manner of tools and techniques to combine and blend our images in Photoshop, but part of the secret to creating convincing composites like this is finding source images that are suitably interesting or unusual. Lenses are critical components in the photographer’s toolkit. While novice shooters often believe the camera to be the most important aspect of a gear system, those with more experience recognise that the type and quality of the glass in front of the sensor is the bigger factor in the success of the final image. Regardless of how many pixels a CMOS chip may be equipped with, or how effective the signal-to-noise ratio, if the optic used to focus light into the camera body is inferior, the fine-detail resolution will never be fully realised. Similarly, if a less-than-optimal focal length is utilised, it may result in an ineffective or inferior composition. Just as ultra-wide lenses are required for stretched perspectives, frame-filling shots of far-off subjects can’t be achieved without the use of telephoto optics. Whether you select a long telephoto prime lens, such as a 500mm f/4, or a telephoto zoom, like a 70-300mm f/4-5.6, these models enable the photographer to refine their composition precisely, cropping out unwanted environmental detail. Equally, for portrait images or some landscape scenes, using a longer focal length can compress the perspective, appearing to bring the background closer and reducing distortion of facial features. These lenses are usually the choice of wildlife and sports photographers – most notably models with focal lengths of above 300mm. 1 LENS HOOD MISUSE Many photographers forget to reverse their lens hood when in use. While reverse-mounting the hood is practical for storage, it performs no protective or flare-reducing function in this configuration. 2 TRIPOD POSITION Longer lenses have a tripod foot for good reason. Always mount your camera using this, and not the camera thread, to reduce load on the lens mount, increase stability, and reduce wear. 3 SUPPORT YOUR LENS Holding the lens at the base offers minimal stability and can actually introduce vibrations. The US National Audubon Society is dedicated to protecting birds and their habitats throughout the Americas, and the society, named after the US naturalist and artist John James Audubon, has announced the winners of its eleventh annual photography contest. Joanna Lentini won the Grand Prize for her incredible image of a double-crested cormorant in mid-dive underwater, taken while she was scuba-diving at a sea lion rookery in the Gulf of California off Mexico’s west coast. Joanna says: “I watched in awe as the cormorants plunged beak-first into the sea to snap at the sardines swimming by. TEMPLATE DESIGN FIND THE CENTRE Rest your sheet of black card on a flat surface and place your lens in the middle (front element facing down). Hold your lens with one hand, and with your other hand draw around the circumference of the lens with a pencil. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure and draw a line across the diameter of the circle both vertically and horizontally.
