1 MODIFY YOUR REFLECTOR Cut a hole the size of your camera’s lens out of the middle of an old, large reflector, then attach it to a stand at the height you want to shoot through. 2 POSITION THE SOFTBOX Position a large softbox behind your model. This will create a very dramatic backlight that can be reflected back onto their face. 3 CHOOSE YOUR SETTINGS High-key lighting usually requires some experimentation in order to get the exposure right. The winners and finalists in the 2020 Minimalist Photography Awards have been announced. This is the second annual competition organised by B&W Minimalism magazine, and more than 4,200 photographs from 41 countries were submitted in categories including Street, Landscape, Architecture and Aerial. Australian photographer George Byrne won the overall award with his series Exit Vision. Byrne wins a $2,000 cash prize, publication in the ‘Best of Show’ Exhibition at Galerie Minimal Berlin, and publication in the Minimalist Photography Awards annual book. www.panasonic.co.uk £3,599/$3,999 The Panasonic Lumix S1H could easily look like a ‘video’ version of its 24-megapixel Lumix S1 mirrorless sibling – in the past it has sometimes been pretty difficult to unravel the different video credentials of Panasonic’s Lumix cameras. This time, though, the difference is clear: the Lumix S1 is a stills camera that’s pretty good at video; the S1H is most definitely a video camera, which also happens to be pretty useful for stills. It’s not just us saying that. The Lumix S1H is the first mirrorless camera to get Netflix ‘A’ approval as a primary camera for filming original Netflix productions – and the cheapest, too, mixing with far more expensive rivals like the Arri Alexa 65, the Red One and the Sony Venice. Laowa has unveiled its new 50mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO for Micro Four Thirds cameras, which the company says is the first 2x macro lens for the format. In principle, this means it can reproduce objects on the sensor surface at twice their real-world size to offer huge levels of magnification on cameras like the Olympus PEN and OM-D series, and Panasonic’s Lumix G cameras. The new lens also contains a CPU and a motor to allow the camera body to control the lens aperture, which is big news as Laowa lenses have traditionally been mechanical-only, manual lenses that don’t communicate with the camera at all. Learning how the positioning of your light will affect the final look of your portrait is extremely important. As mentioned previously, how far from you subject the light is placed will affect the quality of light as well as the size of the light source, but the height and angle will also determine how the shadows fall and shape the model’s face. It’s important that you pose your model to match your chosen lighting setup, then move the light around instead of getting the model to move. Having the light positioned directly in front of the model can sometimes make your shot a little flat, as it will fill in all of the shadows – and the shadows are needed to add depth and interest to the image. 1 MOVE THE LIGHT Position your studio light with softbox as far away from the background or wall as possible, as this will mean the flash will ‘fall off’ before it reaches the wall. Angle it downwards towards the model. 2 POSE THE MODEL You want to illuminate the model, so it’s important that you encourage them to pose for the light. 1 HOUR A macro lens enables you to focus extremely close to a subject so that it’s reproduced at life-size on the camera sensor, opening up a world of incredible detail that’s impossible to see with the naked eye. The drawback is that at such close focusing distances depth of field becomes extremely shallow, and will be only a matter of millimetres even if you stop down to a narrow aperture, so all that detail is lost from all but a very narrow band of focus. The solution is focus stacking. Take a series of shots, each at a slightly different focus distance, then combine the images to include the sharpest elements from each shot. If you were to take the same raw photo with two different makes of camera, the chances are that you’d notice slight differences in the way the photos looked when you opened them in Lightroom or Camera Raw. This is because the colours are rendered slightly differently depending on how the raw data is converted to RGB data – so a Canon raw file can look markedly different to one from a Nikon camera, even when all the settings are identical. If you’re not happy with the look of the colours in your photos, the Camera Calibration panel can help. RESOLUTION (LINE WIDTHS/PICTURE HEIGHT) We tested the S1H against the Nikon Z 6, Sigma fp and Sony Alpha 7 III. With all four cameras packing ~24MP sensors, it’s no surprise that they all resolve comparable amounts of fine detail; however, the S1H is less susceptible to noise at higher ISOs. SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO (DECIBELS) All four cameras perform similarly here too, with the S1H putting in a near-identical performance to the Sigma fp, but at ISO12,800 and above the S1H does produce slightly less noise than its rivals. DYNAMIC RANGE (EV) Still image dynamic range from the S1H is superb. Only the Sony A7 III does better, but only at its base ISO.
