APERTURE MODE Dan advised Chris to select Aperture Priority mode (Av on the mode dial), and then open the aperture all the way to let in as much light as possible and achieve faster shutter speeds – an aperture value of f/2.8 is ideal. Don’t worry if your lens doesn’t open this wide: you’ll just need to increase the ISO a bit until you get a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec or faster, so your images might be a little noisy. AI SERVO AF We used the ‘Q’ Quick Menu to change the autofocus mode to AI Servo, which allows you to continually refocus on the active AF point as long as you hold down the shutter button. 1 PROFESSIONAL TRIPOD Dan uses a Manfrotto 055 XPRO3 aluminium tripod which can support up to 9kg of equipment – ideal for a full-frame DSLR body, gimbal tripod head and long telephoto lens. It’s rock solid, and can be extended to a maximum height of 170cm, meaning that working at head height is comfortable. It also features Quick Power Locks, so can be set up and collapsed rapidly. 2 400MM LENS When birds are further away and it’s not possible to get any closer, a lens like Canon’s 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L can be a big help. With the Sony A7S III, it’s really all about the 4K video from the 12.1MP sensor. The A7S III is well behind much of the competition in terms of outright resolution, but specifying a sensor with such a low resolution – by modern standards – might just well be Sony’s moment of genius, because what this camera can do is record for a very long time, and in very low light. Instead of using valuable computing power – and the heat it generates – with pixel binning or line-skipping highresolution files to get them down to 4K size, the A7S III is designed around full-frame 4K shooting. DJI has announced the successor to its DJI Osmo Pocket, which is simply called the DJI Pocket 2. The new model brings a number of improvements over the original stabilised mini camera, most notably a larger sensor, a wider lens, and a new range of accessories. We were big fans of the original DJI Osmo Pocket, which arrived back in November 2018 as a new breed of vlogging camera, building a camera into a miniature motorised gimbal, to create an action camera that produced ultra-smooth video footage. LENS 70-200mm f/2.8 EXPOSURE 1/1000 sec, f/2.8, ISO3200 CHRIS’S COMMENT Our last setup was the trickiest, as we stepped into an indoor area where the handlers were able to fly this fantastic european eagle owl. The challenge was that light levels were much lower, so Dan advised me to push my ISO up to 3200. Then, as the lighting was consistent, I used Manual mode and set the shutter speed to 1/1000 sec and the aperture at f/2.8. I was using my Canon EF 100mm macro lens, which I had no idea could be such a fantastic lens for larger wildlife. GIVE AUTO ISO A GO ISO can be a tricky parameter to change when you’re tracking animals, as it can necessitate fumbling around with control dials and buttons that are outside your line of sight. While you can change shutter speed and aperture with control wheels, you may find it easier to let the camera decide on the ISO value by using Auto ISO – you can set the maximum ISO you’d like the camera to use, so that images don’t appear too noisey. EXPAND THE AF AREA Generally, the central AF point is the most accurate; however, a single AF point makes it tricky to focus on birds, as they’re prone to swooping away from your point suddenly. Landscape Photographer of the Year is one of the UK’s most prestigious photography competitions, and the winning and commended images from LPOTY 13 have been announced, with top prize going to Chris Frost for an atmospheric shot of a woodland scene which he captured in Dorset in southern England. Frost said: “This was the third visit to the area in a matter of days. On the previous days, both devoid of morning mists, the light had been harsh and unappealing, but the third day delivered stunning conditions with mist swirling through the trees. www.sony.com £3,800 / $3,500 With the latest mirrorless cameras aimed specifically at filmmakers boasting incredible video resolution up to 8K, Sony’s 4K A7S III might seem a little lacklustre by comparison. And with just 12.1MP resolution, compared to up to 45MP from its rivals, the specs suggest it’s hardly going to set the world alight for hybrid shooters who want high-res stills and moving images. TRACKING LCD TOUCHSCREEN The A7S III analyses subject colour, pattern, depth, and face information to track subjects.
