Within the Basic Zone (and what used to be called the Image Zone) on Canon DSLRs are the ‘picture’ modes. These fully automatic modes are helpful for beginners, as your DSLR will take full control over the exposure, focus and other settings to help you get a good shot. However, you’ll be working within restricted parameters, with little control over your results: your camera will focus on what it wants (usually what’s closest in the scene), will expose averagely for the scene or subject, may not set the best aperture or shutter speed for a shot, and won’t know if you’re using a tripod, and so may set an unnecessarily high ISO, creating image noise; and, on some cameras, you’ll be restricted to shooting JPEGs rather than raw images. The Creative Auto (CA) mode (found on Canon DSLRs like the 700D and 7D Mk II) is perfect for enthusiast photographers looking to break out of the auto modes. The CA mode enables you to change a few key settings – in a simplified way. Press the Q button, and you can then use the dial to change the amount of background blur, displayed on the rear LCD, by moving the index mark left to blur the background more, and to the right to sharpen the background. A photo of a roadrunner apparently stopped in its tracks by the border A wall between the US and Mexico has won Bird Photographer of the Year 2021. The image was captured by Mexican photographer Alejandro Prieto, who says the wall, which runs for several hundred miles across deserts, over mountains and even through mangrove swamps, interferes with the migration habits of a variety of animals. “It is not just a desert and is in fact very biodiverse, with more than 1,500 animals and plant species threatened by the wall,” he says. Panasonic has announced the Lumix S 24mm F1.8, a new addition to the company’s L-mount lens lineup. While its f/1.8 maximum aperture is not quite as fast as that of lenses like the Sony 24mm f/1.4 G Master, it’s considerably cheaper and lighter, and has the potential to open up the L-mount system to a wider audience. The Lumix S 24mm F1.8 is the third of four new L-mount primes that Panasonic announced last year – we’ve already seen the Lumix S 85mm F1.8 and the Lumix S 50mm F1.8, so all that’s left now is the Lumix S 35mm F1.8. All newer EOS DSLRs enbable you to record HD video using Movie mode. 10 MINS We often mention back-button focusing in passing. However, if you’re relatively new to photography, or just haven’t got round to trying the technique yet, you may not be familiar with it, so here’s a fuller introduction. You might think there’s very little to explain – you simply use a button on the back of the camera to focus. However, for back-button focus to work effectively, you need to remove the shutter button’s ability to engage autofocus when half-pressed and you need to switch to continuous-servo AF. Within the Basic Zone are fully automatic and slightly more advanced auto modes.
