APERTURE CONTROL “The ever-changing weather can make shooting tricky, with brightness levels varying,” says Ben. “I use Aperture Priority to control depth of field on these days, when it’s cloudy with sunny outbreaks, but I also use Manual a lot for portraits of more sedentary wildlife. On a day like today, I’ll start at f/5.6 and adjust up or down as required.” PUMP UP THE ISO “I adjust the ISO according to the weather and light levels,” says Ben. “For big cats you want a shutter speed of around 1/1000 sec, so when shooting at f/4 to f/8 I needed to increase my ISO accordingly to get a fast enough shutter speed. SIMON’S COMMENT This was a rare photo of the big cats I shot from our own vehicle – with the windows up, of course! We watched the male lion stalk out of the shadows, towards the females sunning themselves, and managed to get in place as he walked towards us. I loved using the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM, which is huge compared to my EF 400mm f/5.6L USM. Ben suggested using a little negative exposure compensation (-2/3 stops) to darken the background, as the lion was lit by a brief burst of sunshine. BEN’S COMMENT Simon is already an accomplished wildlife photographer, but it was good to be able to offer a few key pointers to improve his techniques. For this shot, the huge tiger was running towards us, because the tractor with horse meat was moving behind us. It was a tough shot to get sharp, as the focusing distance was constantly changing with the tiger running so fast in our direction. I used continuous AF with predictive AF mode, placing a central AF point on the tiger’s head to increase the accuracy. The shutter speed had to be high to ensure a sharp shot, so I increased the ISO to 2000, meaning I could shoot at over 1/1000 sec. The forest background makes it look like the tiger has just run…

FeiyuTech has launched the Scorp and Scorp Pro 3-axis gimbals for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. FeiyuTech also makes smartphone gimbals and action camera gimbals, but the Scorp and Scorp Pro are its latest top-of-the-range models, joining FeiyuTech’s existing AK series for DSLRs and mirrorless models. The Scorp design boasts ’Super Anti-Shake’ with a new W9 generation algorithm, Arca Swiss camera plate compatibility, an integrated hanging handle for low-angle shooting and ‘Somatic Remote’. It also features a 1.3-inch touchscreen and Magic Wheel controller for focusing or three-way movements, while regular balancing should be made quicker thanks to 5-way balance adjustment and sliding memory point adjusters. SIMON’S COMMENT We started our VIP photo experience at Longleat in the 4X4 zebra truck. Our guide was able to drive off-road to position us perfectly on either side of the lions, ensuring that we had better backgrounds, instead of the fencing of enclosures. This female came so close that I only needed my 70-200mm lens. I shot at f/4 to make sure her whole head was in sharp focus. We needed to adjust the white balance, as the grass had added a green colour cast to the lion’s fur. PRO TIP OUT-OF-FOCUS FOREGROUNDS By including foreground detail you’re creating the perception of depth. Look for natural foliage that you can place in between you and the subject, and set a wide aperture to blow it out of focus. This…

1 HOUR Every season of the year is a treasure trove of potential for landscape photographers, but autumn’s melting pot of orange, red and yellow hues is something truly special. However, if you’re going to capture this dazzling display at its very best, you’ve got your work cut out for you. Peak autumn changes year upon year, and can depend on the trees you’re shooting and even your location. The best conditions don’t last long either, so if you’re not ready to pounce you can miss your chance. 1 KNOW YOUR SUBJECTS Learn as much as you possibly can about the habits of the wildlife subjects that you’re planning to photography. Ben has done hours of research into the behaviour of big cats over the years, but the Longleat guides are invaluable, as they know the animals and their characters intimately, and can tell when they’re likely to sit happily, or are about to attack the truck! 2 WEAR SUITABLE CLOTHING Dress for comfort. German photographer Adrian Rohnfelder’s dream is to travel to another planet, but while he waits for the call from Richard Branson or Jeff Bezos he’s seeking out and photographing what he calls the “extraterrestrial landscapes on our planet” for his project Interstellar. “In the spring I visited the Fagradalsfjall volcano on Iceland as a counterpart to the hellish surface of Venus,” Rohnfelder tells Photography Week. “Shortly afterwards, I set off for the Namib Desert in Namibia. Super Resolution is a feature in Photoshop’s Camera Raw and Lightroom that doubles the size of your photo. Resolution-boosting tools have been available in Photoshop for a long time, but this one is different. While older tools such as Image Size would increase resolution using standard bicubic upsizing, Super Resolution instead employs machine learning to boost the pixel count. It calls upon a database of millions of pairs of high-resolution and low-resolution sample images, compares the detail in your photo to the similar detail it recognises in these sample photos, then calculates the optimum way to enhance the detail and upsize the photo.
