Wildlife can be elusive at the best of times, but during the colder months, when animals are well-camouflaged or simply sheltering from the cold, you’ll need to do plenty of research to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time. Here’s a fun effect that you can try out on your portraits. Using our supplied Photoshop Action you can transform a portrait into a series of interlinking triangular shapes for a wonderful low-fi treatment. We’ve supplied a start image for this video tutorial, but any close-up portrait will work. Actions are one of the hidden jewels in Photoshop – you can use them to record and then play back any series of edits you like. Our action uses the Average filter to even out a part of the portrait by averaging all the tones within it. Smartphones have evolved to become some of the best point-and-shoot cameras ever made in recent years, and they might soon take another leap forward thanks to an innovative new Sony image sensor. Sony’s semiconductor division has made the world’s first stacked CMOS sensor with two-layer transistor pixels. Today’s CMOS sensors have both their photodiodes and pixel transistors on the same substrate (or layer), but on Sony’s new chip these components are on two separate layers. So what does this mean for image quality? Sony says this new architecture doubles the saturation signal level of each pixel, effectively exposing them to twice as much light. This in turn should significantly improve the sensor’s dynamic range, while also freeing up enough room for larger amp transistors to help reduce night-time noise. The…

WIDE APERTURE To create a shallow depth of field and make your subject ‘pop’ from a busy background, you’ll need to set a wide aperture. Although most affordable telephoto lenses have small maximum apertures in the region of f/5.6-6.3, it’s still possible to get soft backgrounds. Set up so there’s plenty of space between your subject and its background, and use the longest focal length you have available to compress the background. For the very best results you’ll want something like a 400mm f/2.8 telephoto prime lens; not surprisingly such lenses are expensive, so consider hiring one out for a specific trip instead. SCENARIO 1: BACKLIGHTING Shooting directly into the sun is a great creative technique. Rim lighting can be used to highlight feathers and fur, or steamy breath billowing out in the cold; backgrounds should be dark and clear of distractions to highlight the effect. 1 EVENING Light painting is a great way to get into long-exposure photography, and it enables us to shape light in all kinds of creative ways. Most of the time we’ll use a powerful torch in low light or at night to visually paint a scene, and the results can be spectacular. However, for this project we’re going to take a different approach, and place gelled torches in hollow plastic rods covered in translucent paper to create a light wand that features heavily in the creation of the final image. The torch we’re using also has a stroboscopic effect built in, and we’re using this to mimic a style reminiscent of 1980s film posters.
