As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it – and that’s certainly the case with the tried-and-tested ‘rule of thirds’ for composing your photos, whatever the genre. This is a compositional trick where you divide your frame into nine equal boxes and place points of interest along those lines, or where the lines intersect, for even more compositional clout. Skydio has announced the Skydio 2+ drone, which brings some relatively minor hardware upgrades over its predecessor, but one big software feature that could be a big deal for less-experienced pilots. One of the toughest things for amateur drone fliers to master is making seamless aerial camera moves around points of interest. But Skydio’s new Keyframe feature promises to make this much easier than current solutions like waypoints or subject-tracking. Videographers use ‘keyframes’ to define start and end points for moving sequences, along with any important frames in between. Waypoints let you do a similar thing with drones, but Skydio’s Keyframe feature promises smoother results when you’re making complex moves around subjects. Photography literally means to ‘draw with light’ – and that’s what we’re going to do in this fun and easy project which you can do at home. By shining a torch in precisely the right position, we can cast a love-heart shadow from our ring placed on a book. You’ll need to experiment with how bright your torch is, whether it’s too far away or too close, and the angle at which the shadow is cast until you get the perfect loveheart shape. The brilliant thing about still-life photography is that you have the luxury of time, so you can lock off your composition and framing by using a sturdy tripod, and then concentrate on perfecting the lighting with the torch until it’s absolutely spot-on. There are few shots as vibrant as a perfectly ripe red strawberry splashing into a glass of water, with a zingy blue background to set it all off. This shot can be a little tricky to achieve, but as long as you follow the steps below and have patience, it’s just a matter of perfecting your timing. It won’t be long before you bag a winning image! Flash is essential for this technique, as we’re relying on the burst of light to freeze the motion of the strawberry so that it comes out pin-sharp; a softbox helps make the flash less harsh and cuts down on reflections in the glass. You can have some great fun raiding your kitchen drawers and taking experimental pictures of various culinary gadgets. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to take amazing close-ups of a box cheese grater: once you’ve tried it out, you could give it a go on other items around your house, too.
