Before remortgaging your house so that you can buy a lens that looks like a rocket launcher, it’s worth remembering that wildlife photography often comes down to the same basic components as so many other types of photography: time, commitment and effort. Having a giant lens that cost more than your car won’t instantly make you a wildlife photographer – not least because, unless you figure out how to locate interesting wildlife, you’ll have nothing to point it at. Along telephoto might be the first lens that springs to mind for shooting wildlife, but wide-angle lenses can open up opportunities too. A wide lens can capture a more dramatic perspective, and because a large proportion of a scene can be captured in a single frame, they also enable a subject to be captured within the context of their natural habitat. For instance, in the image pictured below, the empty space around the penguin works to convey the expansive environment. Conversely, if you want to capture an intimate portrait of a subject with a wide-angle, the main problem to overcome is that the animal needs to be rather closer to the lens. 2 HOURS As anyone with a printer will tell you, it’s nice to see your photos presented on paper. But gazing upon an entire wall of your own creation takes things to a whole new level. Wall murals are becoming increasingly popular in offices, restaurants and homes, and thanks to healthy competition between print servies they’re more affordable than ever. So why not create your own whopping wall display? Here we’ll show you how it’s done, from shooting the image to making the mural. And even if you don’t fancy making a floor-to-ceiling photo, you’ll find plenty of useful advice on creating ultra-detailed images. Just like any print, the last stage in preparation is to sharpen the image. Double-click the Zoom tool to zoom to 100%, and use Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask to enhance the details, being careful to keep it subtle. When it comes to choosing a printer, a quick search for ‘wall mural printing’ will throw up lots of results. Prices are around £25 per square metre, with extras like matt finish or self-adhesive backing (as opposed to the usual wallpaper paste application). Snap Inc, aka the company behind the Snapchat photo-sharing app, has released a flying camera that’s designed to work with the app. The Pixy drone fits in the palm of your hand, and is perfect for capturing videos of you and your friends or family without you having to concentrate on using a controller. Designed to sync directly with Snapchat, the Pixy is a fun flying camera that has four different flight modes: hover, reveal, orbit and follow. Unlike some beginner drones, the Pixy is a completely hands-free device that takes off and lands in the palm of your hand. There’s a wealth of information online, such as which species can be found at a particular nature reserve, or what time of year nesting birds make their way through. Social media is another useful resource; search for species you want to photograph, and reach out to other photographers or wildlife experts to ask for their advice. Be careful what information you share online, though, especially about the sensitive locations of nesting birds or animals. It also pays to talk to people who work with wildlife, such as park wardens, rangers, scientists and researchers. Especially when you’re travelling abroad, the expertise of a local guide is valuable. Having a clear idea of what you want to capture also helps, although with nature, there are rarely any guarantees.…

SUPER-TELEPHOTO LENS A lens of 600mm or above will help you to capture portraits, behaviour or wild scenes that would otherwise be unobtainable. Pro versions of such lenses are pricey (Canon’s 600mm f/4L costs around £13,000 /$13,000), so it can be worth renting lenses from companies for specific trips on which you think they’ll come in handy. STANDARD ZOOM LENS Considerably lighter and easier to carry and point than a 600mm lens, a good zoom is a vital piece of equipment for shooting wildlife. It’s extremely useful to be able to move through such a large range, zooming in and out as an animal moves, to get the shot you want. 1 DO YOUR RESEARCH Look online, and talk to photographers or wildlife experts, to find the best times and places to locate wildlife to boost your chances of capturing interesting behaviour. 2 KNOW YOUR GEAR Get to know your camera, and how to adjust shutter speeds, apertures and ISO, so you can quickly dial in the correct settings in the field. 3 BE READY Keep your eyes peeled and your camera switched on. 1 CHOOSE A SUBJECT The most important consideration is the type of image you want for your wall. Colours and tones are as important as subject matter, so think about what kind of mood you want the room to have. Natural scenes with recurring colours and shapes, like the bluebells here, tend to work well. 2 USE A TRIPOD Any camera shake will be noticeable at large print sizes. In this video tutorial we’re going to show you how you can transform a regular portrait into something much more interesting by combining it with various graphic elements to create a selection of cool semi-abstract effects. Stabilisation helps to counter camera shake and movement so that your photos are more likely to be sharp. Camera shake can be a greater problem at longer focal lengths, and most telephoto lenses come with a few stabilisation options, including the basic Stabilisation On or Off, but also different modes. For example, on Canon’s 600mm lens, Mode 1 corrects vibrations or shake in all directions, and is meant for photographing still or slow-moving subjects, such as resting animals. Mode 2 is suited to tracking subjects as they move sideways, such as an animal running across the landscape. Mode 3 is best for shooting erratic or irregular movements, such as monkeys playing and tumbling. I recently worked in the Akagera National Park in Rwanda, a park that has been brought back to life by African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board, thanks to initiatives including the reintroduction of black rhinos and the introduction of white rhinos into what is hoped will be a safe haven for them. Rhinos have existed on this planet for 50 million years, but rhino horn has become incredibly valuable to poachers. It’s sold for high prices in China and other parts of Asia as traditional medicine, despite the horns being made of keratin – the same substance as our fingernails – and having zero medicinal value. An atmospheric image of a kebab vendor wreathed in smoke has been named overall winner of the 2022 Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year contest. Indian photographer Debdatta Chakraborty shot the image at a street food market in Srinagar in Kashmir. Food Photographer of the Year features images that capture every aspect of food production, preparation and consumption, from photos of fishing and farming through to elaborate images of restaurant dishes, and colourful shots of people around the world enjoying celebratory feasts. 1 MAKE A SELECTION Take a photo of the wall that you intend to use for the mural. Open it in Photoshop and then select the Polygonal Lasso tool. Click to plot a selection around the edges of the wall, then hold Alt and click around the windows to exclude them. Continue until the wall is completely selected. 2 COPY THE WALL Go to Select > Select and Mask, and use the sliders to improve the selection edge. Increase the Radius to expand the area of refinement along the edge. Set Output: New Layer and hit OK. Next press Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+U to desaturate the layer, and Cmd/Ctrl+L for Levels.
