CAMERA SETTINGS Kieran says… Interior photography is mostly about composition and observation – the camera settings are relatively simple. I use Manual mode and apertures that are generally f/10 or f/11. ISO100 is fine when you’re shooting on a tripod, as the exposure can be as long as you need it to be. LEVEL PLAYING FIELD Kieran says… I use the camera’s virtual horizon as a guide, but predominantly rely upon my own judgement. This is because interior elements aren’t always perfectly level, particularly in a period property. If the floor and ceiling don’t match up, for example, use your eye to frame what looks best. 1 PROPPER JOB Kieran says… Appropriate props not only create a lived-in feel, they also help to break up the monotony of an empty space. Of all the edits you can make to an image in Photoshop, cropping can often prove to be the most transformative. A tighter crop can elevate a photo to another level – it can be used to remove distractions around the edges of the frame, to create an unusual aspect ratio, or to produce a stronger composition. In the case of our image above, a cinematic aspect ratio of 16:9 lets us come in tighter on our subject, enhance the mood, and remove extraneous details around the edges. Cropping can also be used for more functional edits. We might need to straighten a wonky horizon, correct sloppy framing or prepare an image for print at a certain size. DJI has unveiled the DJI Mini 3 Pro, the first premium drone in the company’s Mini series, which started in 2019 with the DJI Mavic Mini and has traditionally been an affordable range for beginners. While previous iterations of DJI’s sub-249g camera drone have all sat some way behind their heavier cousins when it comes to features, the Mini 3 Pro is different, packing high-end features like obstacle avoidance sensors and 4K/60p video recording into a sub-250g drone. And this means it comes with a much higher price tag than its predecessors. The Mini 3 Pro represents a significant leap for DJI in what is – thanks to aviation authority restrictions – easily the most important weight category. Kieran says… Rooms can look a little sterile if they’re empty. The viewer should aspire to visit the property, and this can be encouraged by strategically placing a few appropriate items around the space and even omitting a few. I’ll set dining room tables, add throws to beds, and books to bedside tables to help convey comfort and sell the idea of living in the space. But I’ll also avoid framing things like fire extinguishers and remove cleaning products, because nobody wants to be reminded of safety concerns and chores when they’re on holiday!…

COMPOSITION The chairs either side of a beautiful painting set things up nicely for a close, symmetrical photograph. By stepping further away I was able to include the stack of logs for the fire on the left- hand side, and by making the chairs off-centre, I was free to move the bright yellow ottomans to fill the empty spaces, creating a more engaging photograph. SHOOTING AT SUNSET I don’t like to use flash as I like to keep highlights and shadows looking as natural as possible. Here, by stacking several exposures together, I was not only able to blend the two main layers, but also include a softer blend of the sun rays spreading across the picture. Fexpress is now the memory card format of choice for C professional cameras, as the best CFexpress cards are significantly faster than even the zippiest UHS-II SD cards. Evolving from the XQD card format, CFexpress Type B cards share the same outer design as XQD cards, but pack faster memory inside, making them some of the fastest memory cards currently available on the market. Almost all cameras that originally supported XQD cards have now been firmware-updated to also work with CFexpress Type B cards, so cameras such as the lastest mirrorless models are no longer restricted to XQD cards alone. STRAIGHTEN VERTICALS Kieran says… No matter how hard you try to capture straight verticals in-camera, they sometimes require a helping hand in post. Camera Raw’s Geometry tab features a useful Vertical slider, so you can easily straighten edges. It even provides a faint grid overlay to help you line everything up. LIGHT A VIRTUAL FIRE Kieran says… Fires are cosy and welcoming, so I’ll often add them in post. I simply use Photoshop’s Pen tool to cut out and remove the firebox, and then import an image of a flame on a black background. This is resized and position using the Free Transform command. 15 MINS You could be forgiven for thinking that using a tripod is a sure-fire way to capture shake-free shots. But even when your camera is securely locked in place it’s still possible to end up with images that aren’t tack-sharp. This is because even the slightest vibrations can cause camera shake. A good starting point is to turn off a lens’s image stabilisation, because in some situations this can attempt to compensate for movement that doesn’t exist when the camera is stationary. If you want to be really thorough you could extend this to the in-body stabilisation offered by some cameras, although we’ve yet to experience any adverse effects by leaving it on.
