1 HOUR In this project we’re going to combine the out-of-focus fairy lights with glowing city lights in the background to accentuate the dreamlike effect. To capture the city lights we had to wait until after sunset and shoot in the ‘blue hour.’ This is the period before it gets truly dark, when the landscape is bathed in a cool, blue light. The combination of the blue light of the sky, the background street lights and the orange glow of the fairy lights will complement each other wonderfully in the final shot. You’ll need a lens with a wide maximum aperture – we used a 50mm f/1.4 – but any lens with an aperture of f/4 or wider will work fine; you can use a narrower aperture, but the bokeh…

Gimbal brand Zhiyun has launched a new compact smartphone gimbal, the Smooth Q4. It weighs just 370g, and follows the successful Smooth Q3, which was the first smartphone gimbal with a built-in light. The Smooth Q4 looks to be an improvement on its popular predecessor thanks to a raft of new features. There’s a new 3-axis stabiliser to keep footage smooth while filming, with the power of the motor boosted by 30% over the Q4 to improve performance further. Settings are changed via a multifunctional control wheel, which should allow for one-handed operation. Zhiyun says the Smooth Q4 has a “brand-new look for a better grip and easy packing”. If you want to give those dull colours a quick boost, one of the easiest edits to make is a simple increase in saturation. This is where Photoshop’s Hue/Saturation command comes in. As you’ll discover in this video tutorial, you can use it to increase saturation, either across the entire image or by targeting specific colour ranges. In our paint-splash image, for example, we can enhance the greens without affecting other colours. The Hue/Saturation command is one of the most useful colour tools on offer in Photoshop. Everyone loves a good cat photo, so when Samsung was looking for a suitable subject to demonstrate the capabilities of its in-development 200MP ISOCELL HP1 image sensor for smartphones, a feline was the obvious choice. Capturing a super-high-res photo of an animal not known for being cooperative or predictable posed obvious challenges. “However, the team concluded that the subject should be something that would show off a high level of detail and that was a popular photography subject at the same time,” says Minhyuk Lee from Samsung’s Sensor Solutions Team. Clearly no screen could do justice to a 200MP image, so Samsung turned it into a poster printed on fabric and measuring 28 metres wide by 22 metres high, for a total size of 616 square metres or 6,630 square…

Typical of a ‘trinity’ standard zoom, it combines a classic focal length range with a constant-aperture design.
