HOLDING ON TOO LONG Alex says… It’s difficult to hold a button down while using the command dial underwater, so I activate ‘Release button to use dial’ in the Custom Setting Menu. The button activates when pressed and deactivates when pressed again, allowing you to operate the command dial between presses. HIT THE BACK BUTTON Alex says… Underwater, there are quite a few situations that can confuse autofocus, so when necessary I focus using AF-ON (the ‘back button’). This means I’m free to release the button once I’ve locked focus. Not only is this easier, but it also allows me to recompose before taking the shot. Sigma has announced a pair of new f/1.4 prime lenses in its Art category, the 20mm f/1.4 DG DN | Art and the 24mm f/1.4 DG DN | Art. Both optics are being released for the L-Mount and Sony E-mount. The lenses are being positioned as ideal for astrophotography thanks to their wide focal length, fast aperture for gathering light, sharp rendering across the frame even wide open, and well controlled sagittal come flare, an aberration in astro images that can’t be corrected in post production. 1 CAMERA RIG Alex says… If you’re serious about getting the best-quality images, you’ll want to put together a rig like Valerie’s above. This compromises the housing, dome, viewfinder, strobes, arms and clamps; rope handles, strobe modifiers and a waterproof shutter release cable are optional extras. I like to increase the buoyancy of my rig with a few floats. The winners of the 2022 World Sports Photography Awards have announced, with Reuters snapper David Gray taking the top prize for his enchanting image of Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka helping a butterfly that had settled on the court during a match, with the image framed around Osaka’s shadow. “This is a breathtaking image,” said Simon Burton, co-founder of the contest. “Sports photography captures special moments and tells unique stories, but most of all it draws you in and reveals the unexpected. It forces you to look again and reconsider.” More than 7,000 photographers, including many top professionals, entered this year’s competition, with winners selected across 24 sporting categories by a judging panel that included leading figures from the worlds of sport and media.
