AUTO TO AV MODE Carole was used to relying on Auto mode because she didn’t feel confident adjusting the exposure settings, so Rebecca showed her how to use Aperture Priority mode for more control. “To help Carole control her aperture for nice-looking portraits, I got her using Av mode,” she says. “Setting a wide aperture of around f/4 will enable her to get sharp subjects with blurred backgrounds, which helps the subject stand out.” RAW IS BEST “I always shoot raw, as it gives me much more scope when editing my images afterwards,” says Rebecca. “With a raw image, you can quickly change things like the exposure and white balance, and lighten shadows without damaging the image quality.” As Carole wasn’t confident about editing raw images, Rebecca set her camera…

As much as it’s about skill, perseverance and downright nerve, skateboarding is also about creativity – which is something we photographers can relate to. Both pursuits rely on spontaneity as much as technique; perhaps this is why the best skate photography has a visual poetry to it that most other action sports can’t match. Or maybe it’s because the motion of a talented skateboarder in full flow is so visually appealing, especially when you combine several frames for a sequence photograph like ours. A remarkable image of a ball of bees has won top prize in the prestigious A Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The photo was captured by US photographer Karine Aigner on a ranch in Texas, and shows a group of male cactus bees competing to mate with a female at the centre of the melee. Commenting on the image, chair of the jury, Rosamund Kidman Cox OBE said: “The sense of movement and intensity is shown at bee-level magnification, and transforms what are little cactus bees into big competitors for a single female.” Aigner says that shortly after she captured the photo, a single triumphant male bee and the female flew away to mate.
