When you need high magnifications, the logical choice is to use a macro lens. However, macro optics are, by their nature, fairly niche in their application, and while it might only take a few seconds to change lenses when greater flexibility is required, winter poses unique challenges.
In the extreme cold or if you’re caught in heavy rain, it’s never advisable to expose the delicate sensor in your camera to the elements. Ice can scratch the silicon wafer, and once the camera is taken indoors, condensation will form.
