Low-light scenes are challenging to shoot and, more than in many other genres, it’s important to understand how your equipment works. Knowledge of the interdependence between light and technical settings will help guide you towards improving the quality of your shots. But first, you should be clear about the visual goals of your project, so that you can focus on the essential technical requirements. The choice of camera has a big impact on your image results and, once again, this brings up the question of whether to shoot with a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Preparation is the most important thing when it comes to low-light photography. The light will fade rapidly during the shoot, so it’s essential to familiarise yourself with the surroundings beforehand. It’s advisable to be at the location about two hours before it gets dark, so that you can prepare your equipment and try different framing options. In low-light scenes, the composition of the photograph is important and should be well considered. It can be difficult to create a good balance, as large areas of a subject or scene may be dark due to the reduced light. Such areas should preferably be excluded to avoid overloading the image, while elements that provide additional light should be integrated. Panasonic has announced the new Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. lens for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) cameras. With a focal range of 12-35mm, which is equivalent to the popular 24-70mm range on a full-frame camera, and a wide aperture of f/2.8, the lens promises to be a fantastic upgrade over a kit lens. The new lens will replace the Lumix G X VARIO 12-35 mm f/2.8 II ASPH, and has been co-engineered with Leica. It has splash- and dust-resistant seals, and Panasonic says it’s able to perform at temperatures as low as 14F / -10C. The compact lens weighs just 10.8oz / 306g, and has a 58mm filter thread. When you’re shooting in difficult lighting conditions, it’s important to preserve as much image information as possible. Likewise, when you’re editing photos that have been taken in low light, special attention must be paid to clipped elements, grainy luminance noise and chroma (colour) noise. Shooting in raw format is essential to give you the maximum flexibility in post-processing. Start with the raw developer, as it allows you to make basic adjustments intuitively. Especially if the photo is underexposed, this step allows you to restore shadow detail that appears to be lost, and improve the overall exposure of the photo. 1 HOUR One of the big advantages of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras is that they use interchangable lens systems, so you can attach a lens to suit the demands of the subject you’re shooting: a wide-angle optic for landscapes, macro for extreme close-ups, or a super-telephoto lens to turn distant wildlife into frame-filling shots. 1 ENVIRONMENTAL LIGHTS When choosing a composition, include existing light sources, such as streetlights or lighthouses, to increase the overall brightness of the shot. Also take the opportunity to photograph large buildings, especially ones equipped with many exterior lights. 2 REFLECTIONS Whether it’s water in a landscape or glass in a city, reflective surfaces increase the amount of light in a scene. When you’re shooting low-light landscape scenes, the sky is an important component in the composition of a balanced photo. By emphasising certain elements, such as stars or the moon, you add an extra touch to your image. It may sound paradoxical to talk about using filters, since filters are usually associated with reducing the amount of light that reaches the sensor, but when you’re shooting with long exposure times, this is no longer quite so important. Light pollution is one factor that must be considered. Especially in astrophotography, light pollution from the artificial light of nearby buildings or even a distant city can affect the visibility and clarity of the sky. 1 CHECK HIGHLIGHTS AND SHADOWS In your raw editor, start by recovering shadow and/or highlight detail. If you hold down the Alt/Option key while moving the Highlights or Shadows sliders, clipped areas will appear in colour. Use the sliders to restore detail from overexposed and/or underexposed areas. 2 REDUCE NOISE If you haven’t tackled noise in your raw editor, select the Reduce Noise filter.
