The great thing about creating T light painted images is that you’re likely to already have most of the kit you need. For simple light paintings, all you require for your core kit is a camera with a PASM dial, a kit lens and a sturdy tripod. Additional accessories and torches can all be picked up relatively cheaply if you need them, too. Stock up on a decent assortment of torches, flashlights and LEDs to create your light graffiti, and get some dark clothing so that you don’t appear in your photos. You can always upgrade your equipment as you go, adding flashguns, coloured gels, more powerful lights and additional lenses. PRO SHOT UNDER THE BRIDGE Shooting under an abandoned railway bridge, the train tracks worked well as lead-in lines to pull the eye towards the orb, which is neatly framed by the bridge’s arch. A flash with a green colour gel was used to light up the arch and provide an additional pop of colour. PRO ADVICE PIVOT AROUND THE CENTRE Place a rock or coin on the ground where you want to create your orb. But framing these elements in a balanced way can be a challenge. If we use a wide-angle lens to include the foreground details, the exaggerated perspective can make the backdrop look disappointingly insignificant in the frame. Our eyes don’t work like ultra-wide-angle lenses (they’re more like a combination of a sharp 50mm in the centre and a blurry 20mm around the edges). Tokina has confirmed the arrival of three new super-telephoto lenses for APS-C cameras. The Tokina SZ 300mm PRO Reflex F7.1 MF CF, Tokina SZ 600mm PRO Reflex F8 MF CF, and Tokina SZ 900mm PRO Reflex F11 MF CF are available now for Sony E, Canon EF-M and Fuji X mounts, priced at $399, $599, and $699 respectively. Reflex, or mirror, lenses do not use standard lens construction methods. Where a typical lens will have one long stack of elements to channel the light to the camera sensor, a mirror lens bounces light back and forth within the lens barrel, progressively narrowing the field of view until the magnified portion of the original image reaches your camera’s sensor. WRITE SOME WORDS Draw vibrant words with a torch, or use sparklers for a fiery flourish This is a fantastic technique to try when starting out, as it’s quick and easy to pull off eye-catching images 1 SHOOT FROM A TRIPOD Set up your tripod and attach your camera. Select Manual mode, and set the aperture to f/8, shutter speed to 10 secs and ISO to 100. This should be long enough to write your text. 2 FOCUS ON A FRIEND Have your friend stand in the scene, ready to start writing with their torch or sparkler. For pin-sharp shots, ask them to shine a torch on themselves so that you can achieve autofocus, then switch to manual focus to lock off the focus. 3 START THE EXPOSURE Begin the…

This project is all about having a creative spark – literally! Sparklers look fantastic in low light, and dramatically illuminate your subject as you trace around the outline of your subject. We’ve chosen a bike, as its kickstand allows it to conveniently stay upright, and you can also see through the spokes. Having a friend to help you do the light painting while you operate the camera is ideal, though not essential. If you’re flying solo, be sure to set a long self-timer to give yourself enough time to get into position and light the sparkler once you’ve set up the shot and pressed the shutter button. The winners of the first Canarian Photo Awards have been revealed. The new contest celebrates the best landscape and nature photography from around the world, and well as featuring photos taken on the Canary Islands. Give that it’s a new competition, the standard of the entries is remarkably high. Santiago Leonardo Rodriguez was crowned overall winner for his breathtaking image of lightning striking an erupting volcano. The image is entitled La Hoz y el Martillo, which in Spanish means ‘The Hammer and Sickle’. The contest features five categories: Wildlife, Landscape, Aerial/Drone, Night Photography and Astrophotography, and Canary World – the only category limited to images taken on the Canary Islands. Translating from the Greek words ‘phos’ (light) and graphê (draw), the word ‘photography’ means to draw with light. 1 DAY When heading out on a landscape shoot, we often have a backpack laden with camera gear to carry. An ultra-wide, standard and (perhaps) telephoto lens, a sturdy tripod, and a pouch-full of filters are de rigueur. But when undertaking a longer hiking trip, essentials like additional layers of clothing, water, energy-replenishing snacks and hiking poles take priority. And if you’re planning on walking for miles up and down unforgiving mountainous terrain, the lighter the load the better. Another consideration when hiking is that the priority is to get up and down the mountain during the safety of daylight, forgoing the necessity of a tripod for dusk or dawn shoots.
