APERTURE PRIORITY Jeremy set Robertson’s Canon EOS 5D Mark IV to Aperture Priority mode, also called Av on the mode dial, which stands ‘aperture valu’e. This is a semi-automatic mode that allows Robertson to set the optimum aperture for good sharpness and a broad deep depth of field – f/8 or f/11 for most of the shots he’d be taking. His Canon EOS will then work out the shutter speed based on the metering mode, which Jeremy advised him to set to Evaluative to take into consideration the exposure across the whole frame. SHOOT RAW Jeremy also set Robertson’s camera to shoot in its raw image quality mode. 2 HOURS A long exposure is a wonderful way to blur motion in your photography. Rivers, waterfalls, waves and clouds can look stunning when captured as streaks of silky blur. But when it comes to setting up your camera for a long exposure, how slow do you go? Some parts of a scene may come out better with a really long exposure of several seconds or even minutes, while other areas may be better off with a slightly quicker speed of a second or less. It all depends on the speed of the movement in the scene, and how that translates to blur in your photograph. Canon has announced two new entry-level cameras in its mirrorless EOS R series, the full-frame Canon EOS R8 and the APS-C-format EOS R50. The EOS R8 is Canon’s lightest full-frame mirrorless model, and borrows its compact proportions from the EOS RP, while boasting specs including blistering 40fps burst shooting and 4K 60p video that make it an instant contender for the title of best entry-level camera. The EOS R50, meanwhile, effectively folds Canon’s bestselling EOS M50 into the R system, while adding upgrades only possible on RF-mount cameras. 1 USE LONG EXPOSURES Try using an ND filter and a long exposure to turn people into a blur if passers-by are proving to be a distraction in your scenes. 2 KNOW YOUR RIGHTS As long as you’re on public property and you’re not blocking a footpath, for example with a large tripod, you’re allowed to take photos in a public space. 3 PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PROPERTY While you can shoot on public property, much of the pavement in cities like London is private. As cutouts go, it doesn’t get much more daunting than this. The Eiffel Tower is about as complex a shape as you can imagine; its iconic outline is simple, but it’s all the little details and spaces in between that pose a challenge for anyone wanted to make a selection of it – and the bare tree branches on the right make things even harder. So how can you neatly cut out an object like this? Forget the Freehand Lasso or other simple selection tools – it could take you a week, and even the Quick Selection Tool or Magic Wand are likely to struggle. The winners of the 6th International Wedding Photographer of the Year competition have been announced, with Australian photographer Dee Kampe being crowned overall winner for her wonderful spur-of-the-moment shot of a groom chasing his bride’s veil, which had been blown off by a gust of wind. “I instinctively began photographing, and this frame was captured a few seconds into the veil’s escape,” says Kampe, who took that shot at a wedding in Melbourne. “It’s always the in-between moments that I’m drawn to the most on a wedding day. The unplanned, the unexpected, the pauses. That’s where the magic happens.” Kampe also took first place in the Couple Portrait category, with other categories including Bridal Party, Dance Floor and Epic Location. It’s that time of year – in the UK at least – when the further north you are, the colder, longer and darker the nights become. Hardy souls might make their way outdoors for some frigid winter night shots, but those of us who like our creature comforts might prefer to stay indoors and create prints of the shots we took during more clement seasons.
