LEVEL HEADED Andrea says… I attach a little spirit level to the hotshoe of my camera so I can ensure that all my images are level when I’m using a tripod. I also carry around small pieces of cloth that I place under my tripod legs when I’m shooting inside, so that I don’t scratch the beautiful floors of stately homes. DOF PREVIEW Andrea says… The depth of field preview button [Pv] allows you to observe – through the optical viewfinder – what the depth of field will look like by closing the aperture as per the selected f-number. Andrea says… The temptation when capturing close-ups is to frame the whole flower head and focus on the stigma, but your focal point can be anything that draws your attention. When Ian photographed this dahlia he wanted to depict the curvature of the petals, so we focused on the tip of the most interesting petal and used a very tight crop to fill the frame. Windy conditions are best avoided, but if you’re shooting in a breeze you can use stakes to hold subjects in place.…

30 MINS In this project we’re taking you through the looking glass by showing you a fresh way to shoot landscapes. Many of us love to shoot outdoors, but there are only so many ways to shoot landscapes traditionally. However, with a clear glass sphere from a company such as Lensball, you can unlock creative new ways to shoot vistas. Due to refraction, when you shoot an image through a glass ball, the landscape inside will appear upside-down. You can choose to leave it as-is, flip the entire picture in Photoshop so that the sphere is the right way up (go to Image > Image Rotation > 180º), or select just the image inside the ball and rotate that by 180º so that both the ball and landscape behind it…

Sony has announced the new FE 50mm f/1.4 GM, which is positioned as a replacement for the aging Zeiss Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA, a lens is known for its clinical sharpness, beautiful bokeh capabilities, and premium build. Sony has established a coherent family of f/1.4 prime G Master lenses that share the same design aesthetic and technologies, with the new 50mm joining the FE 24mm f1.4 GM, FE 35mm f/1.4 GM, and FE 85mm f/1.4 GM. Andrea says… You don’t always have to shoot from a low angle – sometimes it pays to find some height. I carry a small stepladder in my cart, so that I can look straight through the viewfinder when my tripod is fully extended. If I want even more height I’ll shoot handheld atop a Henchman tripod ladder, which stands up of its own accord. Ian captured the below image (inset) while standing on the ladder in front of the hall. 1 A HOME FROM HOME Andrea says… My VW Transporter allows me to sleep on site, meaning I can access a garden whenever I want. It also makes life much easier having nearby access to a bed when you’re shooting at first or last light. I group together my shoots that are far from home, and sleeping in the Transporter is easier than arranging accommodation – and it’s more cost-effective too. 2 CART Andrea says… I carry a lot of kit and, as I tend to work on big estates, I can end up covering a lot of miles. This scene of Lake Bled in Slovenia looks like it’s come out of a fairytale, so we’ve given it a suitably enchanting treatment: black-and-white infrared. Genuine infrared images can only be captured in-camera, using either a dense IR filter or an IR-converted spare camera; but the glowing white foliage, dark skies and fine grain that are characteristic of infrared images are fairly easy to replicate in Photoshop, using a combination of tonal tools and simple filter effects, as you’ll discover in this issue’s video tutorial. EDIT YOUR SEQUENCE Andrea says… I opened my bracket sequence in Lightroom and ticked Remove Chromatic Aberration. I then reduced the highlights and cooled the tones slightly using the Temp slider. Next, I lifted the shadows, and synced these changes to the other images before choosing to discard the darkest image. PAINT THE HIGHLIGHTS I imported the images into Photoshop, and chose a base shot before selecting and pasting the overexposed version on top. I added a mask and inverted it (Cmd/Ctrl+I). I then used a white brush to paint in the highlights. The two images were then merged together (Cmd/Ctrl+E). NAUMKEAG Naumkeag – a historic garden in Stockbridge, Massachusetts – provided the backdrop for this early-morning image. I adore how the designers cleverly accentuated the sweep of the garden, which falls away into the landscape beyond. I hope I captured something of its composition in this photograph. THE MOONGATE This was taken at Caher Bridge Garden in Burren National Park, Ireland. I love the way the moongate frames the view of the woodland borders and how the light filters through, highlighting the stone orb and ferns. I used bracketing to capture the details in the highlights and shadows. The Concrete in Life photo contest is one of the more niche-sounding events on the awards circuit, but given the building material’s ubiquity in our everyday lives it offers a wealth of opportunities for photographers, and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has just announced the winners of its 2022 competition. The winning and commended images feature an eclectic mix of buildings and other structures, and Ferdz Bedana won the top prize for his striking black-and-white image of a boy skateboarding in a half pipe at a skate park in Sharjah in the UAE. This all-action/adventure camera’s headline feature is that 8:7, 27MP, 10-bit camera sensor, which captures virtually square 5.3K content that can be cropped to create 4K clips in a host of aspect ratios. Building on the success of the Hero 10 Black, the Hero 11 Black brings back a virtually identical design.
