2 HOURS Off-camera flash can be great for portraiture; you can use it to pick out your subject, and give your images a unique style. But many of us who use it pay little attention to the colour temperature of the light our flash is blasting out, and by controlling the colour, and our camera’s white balance settings, we can create all kinds of interesting effects. Measured in degrees Kelvin, colour temperature describes the ‘colour’ of light, from warm orange shades (lower Kelvin values) to cool blue shades (higher values). Fujifilm has launched the latest in its iconic Instax Mini line of instant cameras – the Instax Mini 12. Building on all the features of the Instax Mini 11, the Instax Mini 12 comes with some new updates and a brand-new design. While not a huge departure from previous models, the Instax Mini 12 has undergone a subtle design update from the Instax Mini 11, with the new model featuring a more rounded bubble-like design. The lens structure has also been updated to provide a more intuitive experience when powering the camera on and off, as well as enabling users to access the close-up and selfie modes simply by twisting the lens. The Dodge and Burn tools are ideal for selective lightening and darkening. There are lots of other tools that do a similar job, but there’s something about this duo that will keep you coming back to them… perhaps it’s the darkroom connection. In a traditional film darkroom, areas of a print would be ‘dodged’ by shading some of the light from the enlarger bulb. A disc on a piece of wire would often be used, echoed in the Photoshop Dodge Tool icon. By contrast, other areas could be ‘burned’ by focusing light from the enlarger onto specific areas, resulting in darker tones. An ‘OK’ hand shape could be used, the hole between thumb and finger channeling light onto the print, hence the hand-shaped icon for Photoshop’s Burn tool. All this…

The World Nature Photography Awards has revealed the winning entries from its 2022 competition, feature a stunning collection of wildlife, landscape, and flora images. The overall winner was German photographer Jens Cullmann, for his striking image of a crocodile partly submerged in mud, which he captured at the Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. Cullmann explains that crocodiles will submerge themselves in mud pools to reduce their body temperature during the dry season. “I had to be very careful not to disturb the crocodile, even though it was buried in dry mud,” he says. “They will launch themselves with tremendous speed and power at any animal foolish enough to come too close.” Click the link to see more winning images, and to learn how you can enter this year’s contest,…
