1 DEDICATED MACRO LENS Clive uses a Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM, while Matthew uses a Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. Both are great options for close-ups, but Clive’s lens has a greater working distance, so he doesn’t have to get so close to subjects. A true macro lens has a reproduction ratio of 1:1, also referred to as life-size, as tiny subjects, such as a small petal or a bug, will be captured at the same size as if they were laid across your camera’s sensor. Canon’s RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM lens has a reproduction ratio of 1.4:1, so can go even larger than life-size, and the legendary Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 Macro has a reproduction ratio of 5:1. 2 FULL-FRAME CAMERA BODY Clive uses…

The German Society for Nature Photography (GDT) has announced the winners of its 2023 Nature Photographer of the Year contest, with Silke Hüttche taking the top prize for her photo of two kites sitting on a telegraph pole. The birds are looking in opposite directions, as if having fallen out, prompting Hüttche to title her image Scenes of a Marriage. She says: “I was fascinated by this scene of perfect symmetry, and luckily both birds remained still for long enough until I had the picture I wanted.” Nature Photographer of the Year is open to GDT members, and this year almost 7,000 images were submitted by 424 members from 13 countries. The society also runs the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest, which is open to photographers across Europe.…

Filters are particularly useful for getting the correct exposure in landscape photography, and if you’re looking to invest in a filter system, then purchasing a decent filter holder is essential. Filter holders make it quick and easy to change between individual filters, plus you can stack filters in front of each other to combine effects. While they may seem more cumbersome at first glance, square filter holder systems can be much easier to use than a collection of screw-in circular filters, as you can switch between different-sized lenses with ease. Some types of filter work much better in a square system – for example, graduated neutral density filters, where you need the flexibility to be able to move the gradient up and down in the frame to match the horizon.…

DJI has launched the Mavic 3 Pro, a new variant of its high-end folding drone, and its first with three cameras, including a new 70mm mid-telephoto camera. The Mavic 3 Pro will be available for around the same price as the Mavic 3, which DJI has announced it’ll no longer be making. The new camera system can be operated as a hybrid camera – with a pinch-zoom mode – or restricted to the three optical focal lengths. These are the original 24mm Hasselblad camera first seen on the Mavic 3, the new 70mm (3x telephoto) focal length, and a new 166mm (7x telephoto) mode. While the previous Mavic 3 also features a 7x camera, the equivalent camera on the Mavic 3 Pro has a new lens to improve resolution. This…

APERTURE PRIORITY To start with, Clive set Matthew’s Canon EOS R7 to Aperture priority mode (Av on the mode dial). The aperture is a hole, the size of which is controlled by a series of blades inside of the len, s and Av mode allows you to make the aperture larger or smaller to let in more or less light. This also affects your depth of field, or how much of the scene is in sharp focus. It’s a semi-automatic mode – you set the aperture and the ISO, leaving the camera to work out the required shutter speed for a correct exposure. Legendary photographer Gjon Mili captured a stroboscopic image of drummer Gene Krupa back in the 1940s and, working with Rich Westley, I tried to replicate this effect with modern tech. I combined a dark room, bursts of flash and a long exposure to create a dynamic multiple-exposure effect in a single image. 1 BLACKOUT To create stroboscopic images you need a dark photo studio. Mine wouldn’t do – it’s an old mill with roof windows – but Rich’s drumming studio has heavy black curtains for sound proofing, which darkens the space. I set up a solitary modelling light to give me just enough illumination to lock focus. 2 CAMERA GEAR Set your camera on a tripod and place a flashgun in the hotshoe. Vanguard has unveiled what it says is its most stable tripod ever, the VEO 3+ 303. It’s available in aluminium or carbon fiber versions, and even the heavier aluminum model is still comfortably portable at 2.3kg, yet can support a huge 25kg of camera gear. Three-section legs mean a relatively long folded length of 67cm, but the VEO 3+ 303 can reach a 139cm maximum height, or 165cm with the central column extended. Having fewer leg sections is good news for tripod rigidity, as there are fewer joints where leg flex could occur. A relatively large 30mm leg diameter further enhances the stiffness of the VEO 3+ 303, and you won’t find a removable leg / monopod conversion feature either, again in the pursuit of maximum rigidity. When editing a landscape like this, where the contrast between land and sky is so extreme, many of us might simply lift the shadows and drop the highlights, but while this quick fix may help to pull detail out of the lightest and darkest portions of the frame, it can also lead to images looking over-processed and almost HDR-like. In March 2019, the company introduced a new filter holder and polariser; some photographers were surprised because the old holder had served them well for years.
