PRO OLIVER WRIGHT CAMERA: CANON EOS R5 Based in Garforth, Leeds, Oliver has embraced Canon’s latest mirrorless full-frame cameras, and now shoots fantastic macro imagery of wildlife, plants and flowers with his EOS R5. 1 SUPER TELEPHOTO LENS You don’t always need a macro lens to take incredible close-up shots. A long telephoto zoom, such as Oliver’s Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM or Peter’s Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM, let you zoom right in on distant subjects. Insta360 has launched a third version of its tiny GO action camera with an intriguing new form factor. The tiny magnetic camera, which weighs just 35.5g, is designed to attach to everything from helmets and surfboards to clothing and even pets, and a new design sees it nestle inside an Action Pod, which acts as a battery case to extend the camera’s battery life. The Insta360 GO 3 comes with a host of accessories, chief among them the Action Pod. While the camera itself has a 310mAh battery which is good for about 45 minutes, the Action Pod adds a 1,270mAh battery for an additional 125 minutes. As well as transforming the GO 3 into a more regular-looking action camera, the Action Pod adds a 2.2-inch flip touchscreen, making it…

MANUAL MODE Oliver and Peter both shoot on Canon EOS R5 mirrorless cameras, so Oliver suggested that Peter input his camera settings so he could follow along. To begin, he put his R5 into Manual mode and set the aperture to f/7.1 for good sharpness. Although it was a clear morning, light levels were still a little low, so Peter switched to ISO800, which gave him a fast shutter speed of 1/5000 sec – fast enough to freeze any birds in motion, and eliminate camera shake. 1 Banded demoiselle at sunrise This was taken early one morning when Oliver went out to photograph demoiselle portraits in ideal cloudy lighting. The sun suddenly came out, and he quickly reacted to take this lovely shot, shooting wide open at f/2.8 to make the sun as big as possible. 2 Tengmalm’s owl Oliver works in northern Sweden during parts of autumn and winter. After exploring the area where he was staying on a snowmobile for two days and returning home empty-handed, he suddenly found this stunning Tengmalm’s owl outside his bedroom window! 3 Zebra jumping spider This is a deep-field stack of a zebra jumping spider made up of about 60 images. One of the best things about digital imaging is the ability it gives you to create places and scenes that could otherwise only exist in the realms of fantasy. As you’ll discover in this video tutorial, with a few simple Photoshop skills, anyone can craft a scene that wouldn’t look out of place on a movie screen. Pergear has become the latest brand to enter the CFexpress Type A memory card market. The company was already producing the more widespread Type B cards, but it has now expanded into cards suitable for Sony cameras like the A1, A7 IV and A7S III. As with all Type A cards, transfer speeds are significantly slower than Type B cards are capable of, but they’re comparable with other Type A cards from more established brands like Sony and ProGrade Digital. Three capacities are available at launch: 80GB, 260GB and 520GB. Read/write speeds vary according to capacity, with the 80GB card capable of 800MB/s max read and write speed, and a minimum 600MB/s sustained write performance. 30 MINS There’s nothing polarising about this kit bag staple; it’s arguably the most widely used filter of all. Circular polarising filters are used to help prevent glare, cut through reflections and bolster the intensity of blue skies. They’re particularly handy when you’re shooting landscapes and architecture, but their ability to reduce glare – even the shine of a person’s skin – means they have a broad appeal. You could write a very dense and scientific book on polarised light, but to put it simply, polarised light creates glare, which is something you can’t remove in post-production.
