If you’re based in the UK the brown hare is one of the most enigmatic and challenging countryside species, but if you want to set your ‘home’ safari bar high, it’s one to aim for. You’ll find brown hares living on and around large fields, especially arable farmland. Unlike rabbits, they don’t burrow, so they’ll always be above ground lying flat in the middle of a field in a slight depression, or hiding in grassland cover around the edges.
Getting close enough is the key, as hares have keen sight and a good sense of smell. Stalk slowly around the field edges, keeping low and remaining downwind. If necessary, stop for periods, waiting and watching. You’ll need a long lens, but habitat images that give…
