With swelling joy, swirling colours and a flurry of smiles, the confetti moment is the quintessential photo from any wedding day. This time-honoured celebration is loaded with emotion, and the chaos of the colour filling the frame elevates this iconic image to a wedding must-have. But getting a good photo of the confetti moment can be a challenge. With petals tumbling in every direction, focus know-how, camera skills and split-second timing are required to capture a picture-perfect confetti photo. Viltrox has launched the second of its autofocus prime lenses for Fujifilm X mount. The Viltrox AF 27mm F1.2 Pro XF offers an effective 40mm focal length when the crop factor is taken into account, making this a fast standard prime that’s suitable for big-bokeh portraits, or for shooting in low light. It offers a faster alternative to Fujifilm’s own Fujinon XF 33mm F1.4 R LM WR lens at a slightly lower price. The new lens is faster than practically anything in the Fujinon range except for the XF 50mm f/1 and the XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR. Viltrox already makes an AF 75mm F1.2 Pro XF in the X mount, which has recently been released for Nikon Z and Sony E APS-C mounts too. The company says the AF…

1 Super-telephoto lens A big telephoto lens is absolutely essential for getting close-ups of fast-moving aircraft. Philip uses the high-end Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM – its high-speed focusing enables it to lock onto fast-moving aircraft with unerring accuracy. If, like most of us, you can’t stretch to the high asking price for that lens, a slower lens, such as Steve’s Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG HSM OS, will do the job almost as well. 2 Zoom lenses “In addition to my monster 400mm, 2 I use a Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM,” reveals Philip. “Between them they cover every focal length I could wish for, with an unbeatable combination of autofocus speed, image quality and flexibility.” 3…

If you want to evoke the past in your photos then why not style them to look as if they were captured decades – or even centuries – ago? There are all sorts of tricks we can employ in Affinity Photo to do so. We’ll explore a host of vintage editing techniques in this issue’s video tutorial. First, we’ll use a texture in combination with a layer blending mode. This is an easy way to add faded areas, dirt and grime to our image, as we can simply transfer the messy bits from our texture onto our photo. 1 CROP LATER Don’t worry too much about getting the perfect composition in-camera; keep your framing fairly wide and concentrate on getting a sharp shot with the central AF points, then crop your shot later in necessary, making sure the horizon is level. 2 WATCH THE WIND Aircraft usually land and take off into the wind, so position yourself close to the grey-and-white-striped ‘piano keys’ at this end of the runway for the most dramatic shots. 3 VANTAGE POINTS Even if you’re not lucky enough to get access to an air base, you can still get great shots from the perimeter. Oceanographic Magazine has announced the finalists in the 2023 Ocean Photographer of the Year awards. The selected entries comprise a stunning selection of images taken both above and below the waves that feature a spectacular array of marine wildlife, and also shine a spotlight on mankind’s relationship with our oceans and their inhabitants. The stated mission of the awards is “to shine a light on the beauty of the ocean and the threats it faces”. The competition is open to both professional and amateur photographers, and features nine categories including Wildlife, Fine Art, Adventure, Conservation (Impact), Conservation (Hope), and Young Photographer of the Year.
