50MM PRIME from £110/$125 A focal length of 50mm has a similar angle of view to the human eye can see, so shots have a natural look to them, without the distortion that you’d see with a wide or telephoto lens when used on a full-frame sensor. For cameras with an APS-C sensor, try a 35mm lens for a similar angle of view. WIDE-ANGLE ZOOM from £229/$299 A wide-angle lens has a wider focal length than the standard 50mm, such as 16mm. 1 GET IN POSITION Find a whirlpool where part of your waterfall creates a swirling motion and frame up so that this is in the foreground. A wide-angle lens will help you squeeze both the whirlpool in the foreground and the forest in the background into your shot. Focus on some rocks in the whirlpool, then switch to Manual Focus mode to lock the focus. 2 SET UP YOUR CAMERA With your camera locked off on a tripod, select Aperture Priority mode and set an aperture of f/22 with an ISO of 100. This should give you a 1 sec exposure when working in a forest. If your shutter speed is too fast, attach an ND filter. Enable the 10 sec self-timer so that you can get into position to…

1 POSITION YOUR FLASHGUN Set up a flashgun with a radio trigger attached, and position it so that it’s pointing towards your bait plate from behind, so that when the hedgehog approaches it will be backlit. Set your flashgun to Manual and input 1/16th power. 2 SET UP YOUR HIDE We created a makeshift garden hide by draping camouflage netting over a bench, though you could lay it across a few sticks, or even tripods or lightstands. 1 BRING A BIN BAG Bin liners easily fit into your kitbag, and are useful to lay on when you need to get down low to photograph mushrooms. They will also work well as an impromptu rain cover for your camera kit. It’s also worth wearing suitable waterproof clothing and footwear that you don’t mind getting muddy when you’re out exploring forests. 2 MACRO LENS With a reproduction ratio of 1:1, macro lenses such as 90mm or 105mm can focus closer and render subjects at ‘life size’ – as if the mushroom was laid across the camera’s sensor. Cosina has announced the Voigtländer Nokton 50mm f/1 Aspherical RF-mount, its first Canon RF lens. Although this lens is already available for the Nikon Z and Leica M mounts, its arrival on the EOS R system marks a significant milestone, as it’s the first third-party RF-mount lens officially licensed by Canon to incorporate electronic contacts, with the ability to communicate directly with the EOS R system, supporting all EXIF data. The 50mm lens boasts an ultra-large aperture of f/1, with an image circle enabling it to be used with both full frame and APS-C bodies. It’s hard to think of a more autumnal animal than the hedgehog – and they make for cute and playful photographs, too. In this project, we’ll show you how to photograph these nocturnal animals during the night, while they’re out foraging for food in the autumn months before hunkering down for winter. We’ll cover how to set up a makeshift hide in your garden – also handy for taking pictures of garden birds during the day if you have a bird feeder, and how to fire your flash off-camera with triggers, useful for night-time wildlife and portraits. The winners of the world’s largest photography competition, the CEWE Photo Award, have been announced, with Ariani Dikye crowned overall winner for her wonderfully atmospheric and dramatic image of locals playing cards in a village in Indonesia. This year’s contest attracted a total of 509,612 entries from around the globe, based on the theme ‘Our world is beautiful’. The competition is free to enter, and photographers can submit up to 100 images, hence the vast number of entries. There are 10 categories, including People, Animals, Sports, Landscapes, and Travel and Culture, and for every entry CEWE donates 10 euro cents to the charity SOS Children’s Villages. The prize fund is in excess of 250,000 euros, and includes a bespoke trip of a lifetime for the overall winner, and photography gear.…

The Column tool in Affinity Photo lets you take the merest sliver of an image, which can then be stretched out to form a vibrant band of colour. The useful thing about the tool is that you can specify a number of pixels for the width, so you can either go for a single row of pixels or – as we’ve done here – make it a few pixels wide. There’s no season quite as colourful and photogenic as autumn. With tree leaves turning into an amazing kaleidoscope of colours, from vibrant yellows to grungey oranges and fiery reds, there’s no better time to get out into the great outdoors and inject some of nature’s fantastic colour palette into your images. At this time of year, the sun also sits lower in the sky, so the golden hour, which occurs in the hour preceding sunset or after sunrise, lasts for a little longer, and will bathe your landscape scenes in a wider range of incredibly rich, warm tones. While many filter effects can be replicated in editing, it’s difficult to recreate the effects of filters such as a circular polariser, Neutral Density (ND) and graduated ND filters. A circular polariser reduces polarised light, which helps boost blue skies and reduce glare on reflective surfaces like glass and water. An ND filter blocks out light, allowing you to take longer exposures, while a graduated ND is only partially dark and is ideal for toning down a bright sky. Some filters are ideal for autumn scenes, including mist and warm-up filters. Your images are only as good as the glass attached to your camera, so buy the best filters you can. Even fitted to the best lens, a low-quality filter will degrade your image quality.…

1 POLARISER (CPL) A CPL filter cuts out polarised light, reducing glare on reflective surfaces like glass and water. They reduce light coming in by about 2/3 of a stop at full strength. 2 NEUTRAL DENSITY (ND) ND filters act like sunglasses for your lens, blocking light so you can extend the shutter speed. If you’ve ever used a camera with a pop-up flash you’ll know the resulting lighting can look harsh and unflattering. Firing your flash off-camera is the best way to change up your lighting by positioning it to the side or behind your subject for side or backlighting. It’s easy to do this with a pair of flash radio triggers. Budget sets usually come in pairs, with a receiver for the flash and a transmitter for the camera. More expensive triggers use transceivers, which have a receiver and a transmitter built into one unit, and can be used on either the flash or camera.…

1 NARROW APERTURE 1 A high f-number, such as f/16 or f/22, creates a narrow opening in the aperture for light to pass through, so exposures need to be longer, but more of your scene from front to back will be rendered in sharp focus. 2 WIDE APERTURE A wide aperture has a low f-number, such as f/2.8 or f/1.8, and creates a large opening for light to flood the sensor, so exposures can be quicker without pushing the ISO up. Capturing a starburst is a great way to add drama to your landscape photos. Preparation is key.
