Astrophotography is a fantastic way of taking your landscapes to the next level by injecting the awe and wonder of our fascinating solar system into your scenic shots, and it’s aso a great way of honing your low-light camera skills. Modern digital cameras can pick up much more detail in the night sky than the human eye, so you can capture incredible depth, use long exposures to create amazing star trails, boost the ISO to capture an aurora, or attach a telephoto lens to pick out distant galaxies in breathtaking detail. Astro landscapes are a great project to try, as a brilliant scenic shot with a stunning star-filled sky above will add a magical sparkle to your landscapes. These types of images can be deceptively problematic, though. You’ll need a long shutter speed to give your camera enough time to expose to the low light levels, but too long and you risk recording blurred star trails rather than sharp pin-points of light. It’s also tricky to achieve precise focus in the dead of night, and difficult to achieve a large enough zone of focus for an image that’s totally sharp from your foreground all the way to the stars, several light-years away in the background. While astro landscapes can look incredible, they can’t match the awe, wonder, scale and detail of deep-sky shots taken with a long telephoto lens. You’ll need an optic such as a 300mm prime, although the 600mm end of a 150-600mm lens would also work well, while a camera body with an APS-C sensor will help you zoom in even further. To expose for the light from these faraway sources you’ll need to take a series of long exposures, usually 30 secs, and for at least half an hour – but the longer you shoot the better, as you’ll capture more detail. Canon has announced the RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM, a full-frame mirrorless successor to the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens for DSLRs launched in 2015. It makes full use of Canon’s full-frame mirrorless RF mount, which the manufacturer claims makes the new optic lighter, smaller, sharper, more feature-packed. Sigma recently launched the world’s smallest and lightest ultra-wide-angle zoom for APS-C cameras, the 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary, and Canon’s new lens takes the title as the world’s widest rectilinear zoom for full-frame cameras that also feature autofocus. While the new lens only zooms to 20mm, rather than 24mm on the EF model, it does have a slightly broader angle of view at its widest 10mm setting. If you extend your shutter speed for too long you’ll see your stars turn from sharp pin-pricks of light into elongated trails, due to the movement caused by the rotation of the Earth. To achieve long-spanning star trails like those in the image above, you’ll need to set up your camera on a tripod, and focus as explained in our previous pin-sharp stars technique. For this method, however, we’re going to push the shutter speed up to 30 secs. Take a test shot to make sure the exposure is correct, and adjust the aperture and ISO for a perfect exposure. 30 MINS If you tend to forego heading out with your camera on days with grey skies and muted lighting, you may be missing out. Drab weather is ideal for shooting minimalist seascapes like this one, and it’s also the perfect opportunity to brush up your long-exposure technique. We braved wind, cold weather and the occasional shower to photograph this coastal beacon. The lone subject, surrounded by sea and sky, provided us with a fine composition – minimalist photography tends to feature clean compositions. We used a 10-stop ND filter to achieve a six-second exposure, which enabled us to smooth out the sea and soften the clouds. The latest updates to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop include an exciting new approach to using presets. By building artificial intelligence into presets, Adobe has now taken things a step further. Available in Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic (v11.4), the new adaptive presets are powered by machine learning. As you’ll discover in this issue’s video tutorial, these function in a similar way to normal presets, but rather than altering the entire image, they zero in on either the subject or sky, before applying tailored tonal effects to the area.
