To create striking outdoor portraits, you need to pay attention to timing, lighting and the direction in which the model is facing. These critical factors play a fundamental role in accentuating the subject’s facial features while minimising undesirable shadows. Shooting in direct light (where the sun is directly facing the model) will create a more dynamic look, with harsher lines between the highlights and shadows. This can be at any time of the day, but the effect is most intense around midday. As the sun is at its peak at this time and is directly coming from above, it can create unflattering shadows on a model’s face, particularly under the eyes and chin. The changing position of the sun throughout the day creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, colour and contrast. From cold dark blues of night, the colour evolves into warm sunrise hues and then cooler blues towards the middle of the day, before getting warmer in the afternoon and evening. We can’t control the natural light, but with experience and technical knowledge we can harness its qualities for our photos. The quality of light is determined by various factors, with three being especially important: temperature, direction and weather. Light is measured in colour temperatures, with low temperatures producing a warm light that adds yellow and orange hues to a scene, and high temperatures producing coolerm=, blue-dominated colour schemes. The ‘multiplicity’ effect is a fun way to combine several different portraits in one image, as you’ll discover in this issue’s video tutorial. It’s a great project to try out with your own set of images, and the shooting technique is very simple. All you have to do is use a tripod to keep all the frames in alignment, then shoot your subject in different positions around the frame. Keep the camera settings and lighting consistent throughout, and try out different poses. Using long-exposure techniques for landscape photography can produce stunning effects, such as blurring moving clouds or water. I like working with longer shutter speeds because they transform ordinary scenes, adding a calm and ethereal aesthetic to images. Choosing the place and time of the day, as well as reading the expected weather forecast, is important. The best conditions for landscapes are during sunrise, golden hour and sunset. The basic tool for long-exposure photography is a filter. ND (neutral density) and GND (graduated ND) filters give you the ability to control the incoming light. The ND filter reduces the light entering the lens across the frame, extending exposure times depending on the density of the filter. The Epson International Pano Awards has announced the winners of its 2023 competition. Spanish photographer José David Riquelme was crowned Open Photographer of the Year for his stunning portfolio of panoramas, one of which, an aerial image entitled The Bridge, which you can see above, also won the Nature/Landscape category. Describing that image, Riquelme says: “From above, lines form a bridge extending from left to right, while on the ground, abstract shapes emerge from the flowing river originating from the glacier. The harmony between the whimsical forms created by water and the natural bridge is perfect.” The awards are the world’s largest competition for panoramic photography, and this year’s competition attracted almost 4,500 entries from 1,104 photographers in 102 countries.
