MANUAL MODE Russ asked Jonathan to start by setting his EOS R5 to Manual mode so that he could to take full control of the exposure. He suggested starting with ISO100 for optimum image quality, as lights can be made more or less powerful to save having to change the ISO; an aperture of f/9 to provide a large depth of field to ensure all of the model’s body was in sharp focus; and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec, which was below the maximum sync speed so that it wouldn’t cause any issues with flash sync. Whether you want to shoot striking photos of your own home, make images for a holiday rental site, help out with a house sale or simply create lovely architectural photos, interior photography is a great skill to learn. It can also be an enjoyable challenge for your camera and lighting skills. There are three key skills in interior photography. First there’s the composition. This isn’t just about picking the best camera angle and lens, it’s also about creating a clean, simple frame that shows the interior at its best. The star of our interior scene here is the ornate fireplace, but during the shoot we weren’t able to light a fire. Thankfully, we can add a few flames later on in Photoshop with relative ease. First find a suitable photo of flames (we found a free image on www.pixabay.com, search for image no.1241199), then copy and paste it into your image. Go to the Layers panel and change the blending mode of the layer to Lighten, then hit Cmd/Ctrl+T to transform it and resize and position it in the fireplace. DJI has announced the Osmo Pocket 3, the latest version of is gimbal-stabilised camera for content creators. The Pocket 3 arrives with a new and larger 1-inch sensor for improved low-light performance, and a larger 2-inch screen that now supports video capture in portrait mode, making the camera a TikTok-ers dream. 1 STEADY CAMERA The luxury we have with a static scene like an interior is that we’re free to light it in segments over several frames. Once the camera is locked off on a tripod, we can move around the scene popping the flash. An easy way to set it off is to set up a self-timer to take a sequence of shots with a few seconds between each one. 2 CAMERA SETTINGS Our camera is set to manual exposure mode with aperture f/11, shutter speed 1/100 sec and ISO200. This gives us a good base exposure for the outdoor scene, but leaves the interior looking rather dim. Affinity Photo offers all kinds of tools for blending images together, from layer blending modes to masking and more. In this issue’s video tutorial, we’ll take advantage of clipping, which allows us to position one layer inside the shape of another. This way, we can break down our portrait into several simple shades of grey, then clip textures to each. We begin by applying the Posterize effect, which allows us to simplify the image into just a few shades of grey. We’ve chosen to create four levels, from white to black. From here we can select the four areas of brightness using the Magic Wand Tool, and create separate layers for each. 1 FLASH AND TRIGGERS Russ has four mains-powered Bowens flash heads with individual controls for toning down or increasing the flash power. He uses a flash trigger on the hotshoe of his Canon EOS R5, with a corresponding receiver plugged into his main flash head. Other flashes are then set to receiver mode, so that the primary flash triggers them all at the same time so they fire in sync. The winners of the Siena International Photo Awards 2023 have been announced, with Iraqi-American photojournalist Salwan Georges named overall winner for his powerful image capturing the everyday realties of the conflict in Ukraine. His winning photograph, Georgy, captures the heartbreaking moment George Keburia said goodbye to his wife and children after putting them on a train to evacuate them from their home in Odessa as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated. The announcement ceremony marked the opening of the Siena Awards 2023, an annual celebration of visual arts that runs in the Italian city until November 19, and which includes exhibitions of images from the International Photo Awards, the Drone Photo Awards, and the Creative Photo Awards. 1 OPEN AS LAYERS Go through your images and select those that you’d like to use, then make any initial edits in Camera Raw. Highlight the images in Adobe Bridge and go to Tools > Photoshop > Load Files into Photoshop Layers. Next, go to the Layers panel and click the eye icons to hide all but the bottom layer. 2 BLEND WITH MASKS Reveal the layer above and assess which parts you want to use, then hold Alt/Option and click the Add Layer Mask icon to add a mask to the layer. Expertise in producing a stable image from a rapidly vibrating gravity-defying box has helped the firm develop the tech for other lines, including the DJI Pocket, camera gimbals and the DJI Action series. In fact, DJI has made some serious attempts to innovate in the action camera space, not least the quirky Osmo Action 2, which separated into a battery and camera unit; without the extended battery, the Action 2 was much smaller than a GoPro.
