Before the advent of digital photography, neutral density (ND) graduated filters were necessary for landscape photography and other genres of outdoor imaging. The dynamic range of outdoor scenes is often well beyond that which a film emulsion or digital sensor can capture, meaning that detail is lost in either the brightest highlights or the deepest shadows. While the immediate danger to each differs between film and digital, the effect is the same – areas of the frame that are devoid of fine detail and colour, due to either overexposure or underexposure. But with the digital revolution came exposure blending techniques, from manual blending using layers to tone mapping and luminosity masking. These can be used to produce high dynamic range (HDR) images, but there are trade-offs, namely ‘ghosting’ of moving…

Another area where hardware A filters cannot be replaced with software trickery is in control of exposure duration. Although it is possible to simulate long-exposure effects by combining multiple frames, this is often a computer memory-heavy task when working with large raw files. It also requires the final images to be broken into many component parts, taking up valuable hard drive space and, indirectly, power. Remember that the more files you back up in cloud storage, for example, the more energy is used, which can affect your bank balance and the climate when measured over the course of several years. ND filters come in several forms and strengths, with the usefulness of each one depending on the type of photography you normally shoot. The most common type are square systems,…

1 SET UP CAMERA A tripod is an essential tool, especially when shooting with a polariser under a canopy of trees. First, set the focal length, as this will have an impact upon the polarisation strength, as will the camera orientation. Set an aperture of between f/8 and f/11. 2 METER THE SCENE Reflected images often require a greater exposure than the ‘real’ elements, due to light being absorbed by the reflective material, in this case, the water. Set the metering mode to Partial or Centre-weighted and take a reading from the reflected areas. 3 FIND THE GREATEST FILTRATION Rotate the outer ring of the filter until the reflections disappear or colours appear more saturated in other parts of the image. Restoring old photos is one of the most satisfying of digital touch-up jobs. Not only are you able to remove dirt, scratches, and all the other ravages of time, you can also add your own creative input by colourising these old prints. This is a relatively simple matter of painting on different layers set to the Color blending mode, a technique that – with a little practice – even a complete Photoshop novice can master. Often, the trickiest part of the process is choosing which colours to use, and with some images, a little research can help. Insta360, the brand best known for its 360-degree cameras and mobile gimbals, has unveiled its first wide-angle action camera, the Insta360 Ace Pro. The new camera, which has been co-engineered with Leica, is a direct rival to the GoPro Hero 12 Black and DJI Osmo Action 4, and while it’s pricier than those cameras its headline spec is one that neither of those cameras can offer: 8K video. The Ace Pro’s 1/1.3-inch 48MP sensor is essentially the same as the sensor in the Osmo Action 4 – both are larger than the Hero 12 Black’s sensor – and shoots 48MP stills in JPEG or DNG raw format. Capture an image with the grad filter in place, then quickly remove the filter and shoot a second frame. Open these shots as layers and mask out the unfiltered area, usually the ground at the bottom of the frame. It might seem counter-intuitive to use an ND grad and then blend exposures in software, however, there are advantages of doing this compared with either the hardware or HDR blending options.…

1 SET A FLAT PROFILE In-camera profiles aren’t applied to raw images but set a flat camera style to create a low-contrast preview image. Apparent clipping will occur less often, making the preview closer to the true appearance of the raw file. 2 SHOOT AND REVIEW Use a mid-range filter density, such as 0.6ND. Shoot an image and check whether there is movement in the scene. Switch to manual mode and lock the exposure so the shutter speed won’t change. 3 ADD STEPLESS FILTRATION If the exposure isn’t long enough, take a filter one stop greater, hold it so that it is aligned with the lens, trigger the shutter and remove the filter halfway through the exposure in a swift motion. 4 ADJUST BRIGHTNESS Review the new image and adjust…

At their peak, there were hundreds of different hardware filter types. Whatever special effect you wanted to create, there was a good chance that a filter was available to serve your purposes. Some were genuinely useful for professional situations, while others were gimmicky and questionably necessary. Digital software filters have put an end to most of these, but there are still a few more unusual types that have a part to play in professional digital photography. This is potentially even more true in the current age of cross-genre content creation. The winners of this year’s Dog Photography Awards have been announced, with Swedish photographer and dog lover Sanna Sander taking the top prize for her strikingly original image Ascending Serenity, which features her azakwakh (a breed of West African sighthound) Soleil posing on, and almost disappearing into, a stack of logs. The competition features four categories: Portrait & Lanscape, Action, Studio, and Dogs & People. It’s open to both professional and amateur photographers, with the goal of “showcasing the incredible diversity of our canine friends and the artistic vision of the photographers who capture them”. The first set of filters I bought was a trio of neutral-density graduated filters made by Cokin. They were fairly basic, each filter made of lightweight plastic, and they scratched within seconds. For a fresh-faced photographer armed with a new DSLR, these filters might not have been the most exciting purchase, but the magic of seeing a balanced exposure appear on the LCD was transformative. Exposure blending, colour grading and creative preset application in software are extremely powerful processes, but there’s always a feeling that your images are, quite literally, in pieces. The preview images you see on your camera screen aren’t even close to being finished. In the field, you have the choice of using a strong filter, such as 1.2ND or grad, or stacking multiple weaker filters. Reducing stacking will improve the image quality, but strong filters can introduce complex colour contamination. The choice should be influenced by light predictability. If the light is consistent, a strong filter is better to improve resolution; but if the light is changeable, multiple filters provide greater versatility, and allow rapid adjustments to overall filtration density. 1 A SINGLE 1.2ND GRAD Here there’s less flare to manage, and the maximum sharpness is possible from the lens. Any changes in light would mean swapping filters and a greater workload. 2 USING TWO 0.6ND GRADS This offers rapid, precise adjustment to filtration to better match the exposure requirements. Colour management has become significantly more streamlined in the digital age. At one time, with a film installed in your camera, you were limited to the colour balance of the emulsion used and, if the lighting changed, you were forced to swap rolls. Alternatively, it was necessary to attach a colour-balancing filter to minimise unsightly colour casts. Nowadays, just a simple change of white balance preset is necessary, which means a faster workflow and no wasted frames. Of course, the advantages also extend to the editing possibilities afforded by RAW processing software, where the opportunities for colour correction and creative toning are almost limitless. Showjumping is a sport that consists of a horse and rider navigating a series of jumps. Those who clear the course without knocking any of the poles down head into a ‘jump-off’, with the cleanest and fastest round winning the competition. The jumpoff is helpful for photographers, as it means that you have a second chance at getting the best shot possible. A great showjumping photo conveys the natural movement of the horse with the rider’s face in focus. This often requires you to stop down to around f/4, or my preferred aperture of f/5.6, as you need to get both subjects in focus; if the horse or rider isn’t sharp, the photos aren’t worth the space on your memory card.
