However, processing images for a dramatic monochrome look remains popular among photographers of landscapes and portraits, as it delivers sophisticated and timeless results. Selections have become a lot easier over the past decade of photo editing development, but the latest generation of software has taken this to a new level. It’s now possible to tap a ‘Select Sky’ or ‘Select Object’ option and the application will automatically identify, select and refine the appropriate image area, based on colour and brightness. Strong lines and clear shapes work well in landscapes. Here, the shape of the mountain peak on the right is the focal point of the scene, but the skyline could be enhanced with a subtle shift in perspective. In this video tutorial we’ll lower the distant horizon using selections and layer masks, which will make the foreground mountains jut further up, and we’ll also drop in a smoother sky to offer more contrast with the rocks below. Canon has released firmware updates for seven of its EOS R mirrorless cameras. The updates, for both APS-C and full-frame cameras, fix some annoying bugs and more minor issues, and they also add support for the recently released Canon RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. The cameras receiving updates start from the entry-level Canon EOS R50 through the R10, R8, R7, R6 and R6 II, up to the current flagship EOS R3. While the firmware notes are slightly different between models, each fixes minor bugs and issues with the cameras, and all but the EOS R6 update add support for the aforementioned 0-18mm f/4.5-6.3 lens. If you’re unsettled by the term ‘artificial intelligence’, then ‘machine learning’ might suit you better. Whatever you call it, the advanced algorithms used by tools like Photoshop’s Neural Filters add pixels by remapping those already present in your image file. This can enable rapid reworking of facial features, blending of landscape elements, altering apparent depth-of-field and complex colour adjustments. A chance-in-a-million image of a bird perching on a bride’s head has won Canadian photographer Tara Lilly the prestigious title of International Wedding Photographer of the Year. Every year IWPOTY showcases a selection of captivating wedding images, ranging from the informal and spontaneous to elaborately staged set pieces, but this year’s winning entry was something a bit different. Lilly snapped the delightful photo at the mountaintop wedding of Mikaela and Mitch in Whistler, Canada. She recalls: “Just as Mitch began his vows, a curious whiskey jack swooped in and landed directly on top of Mikaela’s head. Mikaela’s shock, surprise and laughter were not enough to dissuade this bird from his perch.” Prizes were awarded in categories including Couple Portrait, Dance Floor and Epic Location. The Nikon D f arrived in 2013, but failed to garner any sequels. Nikon dipped its toe in the water again in 2021, with the Nikon Z fc and got a different reaction. Nikon claimed that demand for the Z fc far exceeded its expectations, showing that there was a serious appetite for cameras with a vintage aesthetic. At the outset of the digital age of photography, many creatives were critical of what was more commonly referred to as photo ‘manipulation’ – a word that carried many negative connotations. Some hardened film devotees may have seen post-processing as cheating, merely because of how much quicker it was to apply effects at the computer, compared with the equivalent darkroom processes. Colour grading is often used in photography and film-making to improve the aesthetics of stills or footage, and to create a narrative. It refers to the process of tweaking and enhancing the colours, whether you want to generate a warm, cool, vibrant, muted, or even historical look. We might, for example, shift the saturation and hue of shadows and midtones to get a result that’s more moody than what the camera captured. Colour grading has soared in popularity as editing software has become more intuitive and content creators look for ways to distinguish their work. There’s a lot of hype surrounding AI in photo editing right now, but the reality is that it will be most useful to pro photographers when ‘all else fails’. Of course, there is the temptation to apply extreme effects, but tools such as Generative Fill in Photoshop also allow us to subtly reframe and extend environments. The ability to add scene elements with text prompts may not be to everyone’s taste, but where, for example, your lens wasn’t quite wide enough these AI tools can offer an opportunity to fill in the missing parts of the frame. As inhabitants of an island nation we’re drawn to the sea, and landscape photographers are certainly no exception – seascapes are among our most popular subjects.
