While you won’t be working in shutter priority mode when capturing waterfalls and streams because aperture control is essential, shutter speed remains an important creative control that can dramatically change the mood of your water-based landscapes. Personal taste plays a factor in how fast or slow the shutter speed is, and you can also use ND filters or adjust the ISO for control, but too slow and all detail and texture in the water is lost, while too fast and images look like nothing more than snapshots. Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year can always be relied on to serve up a feast of colourful and captivating images, and the winners of this year’s contest have been announced, with Chinese photographer Zhonghua Yang taking the top prize for his wonderfully evocative image of dumplings being prepared for a spring festival feast. This year’s competition featured 26 categories encompassing every aspect of food production, preparation, and consumption, from photos of farming and cooking to elaborate images of restaurant dishes and pictures of people around the world enjoying celebratory feasts. Ricoh has announced two new additions to its line of waterproof compact cameras, the entry-level Pentax WG-1000 and the more advanced Pentax WG-8. At first glance the differences between the Pentax WG-8 and its predecessor, the Ricoh WG-6, appear minimal, other than the change of branding (Ricoh bought Pentax back in 2011) and model number. Both cameras can withstand temperatures of minus -10C, are waterproof to depths of 20 meters, and shockproof against falls from a height of 2.1 meters. The 20-megapixel camera has a 5x zoom range, with an equivalent focal range of 28-140mm. The camera has built-in GPS for geolocation, and has a microscope-like macro mode that’s aided by a built-in ring light. One key difference is that the WG-8 will be available in green or black –…

SCREW-ON FILTERS Screw-on filters are a great budget option for beginners, and the easiest filter type to work with. They don’t stack well, though, so it’s often best to only use one filter type at a time. MAGNETIC FILTERS Circular magnetic filters are low profile, and multiple filters can be stacked well, even with a wide-angle lens. Their main downside is that ND grads aren’t available in this format. SQUARE FILTERS Square filters are the most versatile option, and are used with a dedicated filter holder. ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes’, is an often-used phrase within the outdoor activities community, and the same applies to landscape photography. Landscape photographers should not only heed this simple yet pertinent advice, but we sometimes need to go one step further in being prepared when we go shooting. Wellington boots are a landscape photographer’s best friend in a wide range of situations - think of them as amphibious tanks for your feet. For waterfalls and streams, wellies allow you to enter the water for the best compositions, rather than simply wearing walking boots, which can confine your to the water’s edge. Waterfalls and streams are commonly found in gorges, where the light levels are naturally lower than out in the open. This means that you can often achieve a desirable slow shutter speed of one to two seconds with just a polarising filter to remove glare from the surface of the water. But if the light is brighter or you’d like an even slower shutter speed, then either a one, two, three or four-stop ND filter or a variable ND filter will be necessary to extend the exposure time. 1 ATTACH THE ND FILTER Compose your shot and focus using either manual or autofocus. The music festival season is upon us, and it’s the perfect opportunity to experience your first taste of live music photography – short of donning the denim and leather and screaming into a microphone, nothing gets you closer to rockin’ out on stage. POLARISING FILTER Polarising filters are the most versatile type, and if you only own one filter it should be one of these. They’re great for waterfalls, streams and landscapes because they remove glare from water and rocks, increase saturation, deepen blue skies, and act as a low-strength ND filter. ND FILTER ND (neutral density) filters feature a light-reducing coating that allows you to shoot at slower shutter speeds. Circular and magnetic filters also offer variable NDs with adjustable strength. At the extreme, you can also get six- and 10-stop ND filters for ultra-long exposures to capture silky flowing water. Along with light, viewpoint is one of the most important aspects of all types of photography. Even a small change in the height or angle of the camera, or a slight adjustment of position in relation to the subject, can completely change the composition and, ultimately, the mood of a photo. ‘Working a location’ is a term that refers to exploring as many compositional opportunities as possible by adjusting the three factors mentioned above.
