Finding unique landscapes to photograph doesn’t have to require extensive travel. With the right approach and perspective, many scenes can be viewed in a different light, and the resulting composition may even surprise you. It’s important to keep an open mind, and to analyse each landscape individually by testing out different viewpoints. Of course, monitoring weather forecasts is key to anticipating stormy conditions. 1 STAY STEADY As you’re working with long exposures, mount your camera on a sturdy tripod to ensure stability and reduce the risk of motion blur. This helps deal with demanding angles and allows you to handle long exposures effectively. 2 TURN OFF VR/IS To ensure sharp results, deactivate VR/IS (Vibration Reduction/Image Stabilisation) on the lens and body. This is to prevent image distortion caused by movement – otherwise, the stabiliser may introduce vibrations, leading to blurry images. 3 SELECT MANUAL Switch to M mode for precise exposure control. Photo booths have become hugely popular, and you’ll often see professional setups at big events. But with a few simple skills, a DIY booth can yield results that are just as good. If you want to set one up – perhaps for a wedding or party – you’ll find a host of tips over the following pages to get you started and in the party mood! A photo booth could be as simple as placing a mobile phone in selfie mode on a tripod. But there are ways to make the booth more polished and dynamic. First there’s the lighting, A couple of studio strobes allows for professional, flattering light that can illuminate groups large and small. We set the camera up on a tripod [1] and attached a Speedlight [2] to fire our studio strobes. We connected an HDMI monitor displaying the live view feed to help guests get into position [3]. We attached a wireless remote shutter release and transmitter for people to press themselves [4]. Next we set up two studio strobes with white umbrellas [5], set to optical trigger so that they would fire on detecting the Speedlight. We attached the camera to a laptop and tether using Lightroom [6]. A large display is connected to the laptop as a dual monitor, with Lightroom set to display images as they’re taken [7]. Nikon has unveiled the Z6 III, the successor to the original Z6 and 2020’s Z6 II. While the Z6 II largely added incremental quality-of-life improvements to the Z6, the Z6 III takes the Z6 line a few steps further, with new sensor technology, and a new emphasis on hybrid video and content creation. Launched back in 2018, the Z6 series kicked off Nikon’s new mirrorless lineup, and the Z6 III might be a signal of Nikon’s future ambitions. While the sensor resolution remains at 24.5 megapixels, the sensor itself is a new ‘partially stacked’ design, offering much faster readout speeds. 1 BOX FOR THE CAMERA We don’t want anybody touching the camera, so a good solution is to make a box that fits over it. We used a cardboard box and cut frontal holes for our external monitor and lens, and a hole in the top for a Speedlight. We taped a tube along one corner of the box so that we could slot it into a light stand. 2 TETHERED LAPTOP We tethered the camera to a laptop tucked out of sight, connected to a second screen on a table so that guests could instantly see their photos. Photoshop offers various boxes of tricks for creating all kinds of effects. There are tools and filters that can transform your image into something unreal, and others that let you make more realistic changes. The Depth Blur filter falls into the latter category. As the name suggests, this filter can mimic the effects of in-camera blur. If your image has a foreground in front of the subject, this is blurred too, and the result is realistic fall-off in front of and behind your focus plane, as you’ll discover in this issue’s video tutorial. Wherever you are in the world you’re likely to be spoilt for choice for stunning summer landscapes you can shoot, although you may have to do some travelling if you’re keen to photography some of the iconic locations that have become famous through social media. Summer shoots aren’t all plain sailing, though. While the light presents us with a wide range of opportunities, it can also produce high contrast and harsh shadows that are challenging to work with, and this is especially true for photographers who are new to this genre, who may find mastering summer lighting a greater challenge than the smoother and more subtle light of autumn, for example. FOCUS ON SHAPES Leading lines such as a path or street, or repeating shapes in the form of trees, add interest to the frame. Also, pay attention to any shadows created by the harsh summer sun to take your composition further. ADD INTEREST One strategy for creating further elements of interest is to lower your perspective and include more foreground. This way smaller objects are blended into the composition, offering the viewer a ‘step’ into the frame. ELEVATE THE VIEW Get on a high viewpoint, such as a nearby mountain, and discover how the scene visually changes. From on high, the sunlight will often envelop the subject. 1 TEST THE LIGHT Shoot in Evaluative metering mode. Analyse the camera’s histogram, and note any signs of overexposure. When many areas are clipped, it might be best to reconsider your composition or to use supporting tools, for example, a graduated ND filter, so that you can better manage the exposure. 2 BE PRECISE To master challenging lighting, you need to work precisely. To take readings from smaller areas of highlights or shadows, switch the Metering Mode to Spot or Partial Metering. Both of these settings typically ignore the edges of the frame and minimise the exposure reading area. 3 COMPARE Take a reading from both the darkest and the brightest elements, and the camera will suggest exposure settings (in EV stops). An image of an orangutan at a wildlife attraction in Bangok has won the top prize at this year’s Environmental Photography Award competition, which celebrates the beauty of our planet while also raising awareness of the growing threats to wildlife and natural habitats. See No Evil was taken by photojournalist and filmmaker Aaron Gekoski, who has reported on subjects such as the illegal wildlife trade, deforestation, marine conservation, and animal tourism. “The orangutans used in the shows are often stolen from the wild, smuggled across borders, and then trained using cruel methods,” says Gekoski. 1 BALLOON ARCH Create a backdrop for your photo booth. A balloon arch can be a great way to make a frame for the party people to pose in. We bought a set from Amazon for a few pounds, which we attached to a couple of light stands (equally it could simply be fixed to a wall).
