1 REMOVE DISTRACTIONS Load up your image into Photoshop CC. Select the Patch tool (J), and draw around any unwanted light spots, then click and drag the selected area over an unaffected bit of your image. The Patch tool will match the texture of the dragged area and remove the unsightly spots. 2 CONVERT TO A SMART OBJECT Convert the Background layer to a smart object layer to give yourself more editing options. Right-click on the layer and go to Convert to Smart Object, then head to Filter > Camera Raw Filter. GoPro has announced its new flagship camera, the Hero13 Black, and while there are certainly improvements under the hood, the big focus this year is what you’re attaching up front, with a range of new Lens Mods launching alongside the camera. (There’s also a new budget Hero camera, of which more later.) The new lenses, in what GoPro has dubbed the HB-Series, include an ultra-wide that stretches the field of view to 177°, and a Macro lens with a minimum focus distance of 4.22 inches / 0.11m, and focus-peaking compatibility for pin-sharp footage. There’s also a neutral density (ND) filter set containing four different strengths of filter. If you needed any more convincing that black-and-white photography can convey drama and atmosphere in a way that just isn’t possible with colour, the spectacular selection of winning images from this year’s Black and White Photo Awards should do the trick. This year’s overall winning image, Destroy Together by Haikun Liang, is certainly full of excitement and energy – however, while it looks like it could have been taken during a protest march or even a riot, and despite its menacing title, the story behind it is rather more innocent – it shows young people celebrating with firecrackers during the Spring Festival in China. The most recent addition to Photoshop’s suite of retouching tools is so smart that it’s likely to become your go-to for many retouching tasks. If you want to remove something from a photo, the Remove Tool will almost always do a great job. Simply paint over the offending object and it’s gone in an instant. In our example image, it lets us transform a bustling tourist snap of the famous Treasury building at ancient Petra in Jordan into a wonderfully empty scene. Of course, it’s not quite perfect. Light painting is a great way to get into long‑exposure photography, and it enables us to shape light in all kinds of creative ways. Most of the time we’ll use a powerful torch in low light or at night to visually paint a scene, and the results can be spectacular. However, for this project we’re going to take a different approach, and place gelled torches in hollow plastic rods covered in translucent paper to create a light wand that features heavily in the creation of the final image. The torch we’re using also has a stroboscopic effect built in, and we’re using this to mimic a style reminiscent of 1980s film posters. The effective focal length of 95mm (less than the true focal length because this lens is paired with Fujifilm’s medium-format GFX cameras) is ideal for extreme close-ups of anything and everything, from bugs and insects to wristwatches and the other interestingly detailed paraphernalia of everyday life. The minimum focus distance for achieving maximum magnification is 0.45m (as measured from the image sensor in the host camera), and enables a comfortable working distance. Yet this lens is no one-trick pony. With fast autofocus and five-stop optical image stabilisation, it works well for portraiture and any other shooting scenarios that require a short-telephoto focal length.
