Swift teams up for cheaper insurance Swift owners could be in line for half-price caravan insurance, following the formation of a partnership between the firm and Caravan Guard. Under the deal, anyone buying a new or less-than-three-year-old Swift from an approved dealer could be eligible for the discount. In partnership with Black Horse, Swift has also launched the Swift Advance scheme, designed to spread the cost of buying a van. I haven’t seen the country that is used as a striking backdrop to the latest campaigns by Bailey, Swift et al, but it strikes me that, as a home for elves, a van would be hard to beat. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I REALLY LOVE a Christmas market – they are such a good way to set the mood for the festive season, especially if they involve handmade crafts and warming Glühwein, and you are togged up cosily in woolly hats, scarves and gloves. For those still touring, there are numerous markets being held around the UK; some just for a weekend, others lasting several weeks, and some – in Bournemouth, Edinburgh and London – going on until January. Belfast, Bristol, Canterbury, Cardiff, Chester, Leeds and Glasgow all have markets running almost until Christmas. Heading to East Riding this winter? The market towns will look even prettier with their festive lights strung up, and there are plenty of interesting markets for you to browse. Regular markets are held in Beverley on Wednesdays and Saturdays. As well as these, the annual Beverley Festival of Christmas takes place on Sunday 9 December. You can expect the town to become a veritable wonderland, complete with Santa and his reindeer to add to the atmosphere. Driffield Christmas Festival is held on 30 November, so you’ll have to get your skates on if you want to visit. Meanwhile, Cottingham is holding its first-ever Christmas Festival on Sunday 16 December. There are several free car parks in Berwick, but waiting time is limited to two hours and you will need to display a parking disc. These cost £1 and are obtainable from the library, tourist information centres and some local businesses. There is no time restriction in the long-term car parks at Castlegate and Foul Ford. Head to nearby Spittal for a glorious beach and fantastic vistas across the water to the walled town of Berwick and the lighthouse. 1 Abbey Wood C&MC Site, London One of the things we like most about Abbey Wood Caravan & Motorhome Club site is that, despite being hidden in south-east London’s suburbs just 30 minutes from the city centre, once pitched up, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a much more rural setting. The site is beautifully landscaped and surrounded by trees, with the great expanse of Abbey Wood moments away. Here you’ll find the historic remains of the abbey, as well as a great space for kids to play and dogs to exercise. SPOTLIGHT ON… WINTER LAY-UP Preparing your van for storage involves a few key tasks, says Sammy Faircloth THE COLD, DARK evenings are not for everyone, and some of us like nothing better than to snuggle up at home in front of the fire. Nothing wrong with that, but it is advisable to carry out some simple jobs before storing your caravan for the winter, or you could find it costing you when you return to it next spring. Indoor tasks ■ Cleaning It would be remiss to leave any caravan in a mucky state, so give it a thorough clean before putting it away. IF YOU HAVE the Alde heating system in your caravan, you’ll know that from time to time, you have to reset the clock on the display unit. This usually occurs when the caravan’s 12V battery has been disconnected. But now you can stop this happening. Alde’s Battery Backup unit comprises a 2 x AA battery holder and the means to plug it into the rear of the control panel. This is what I fitted in our van, but it’s quite simple (and a bit cheaper) if you fancy making up a unit from scratch, or if the cable on the Alde version isn’t long enough. BAILEY STIRRED THINGS up in late 2009, when it launched its Alu-Tech tourers. The new Pegasus was offered as a complete departure from its Ranger, Pageant and Senator line-ups. Pegasus was to take the caravan world by storm, although other manufacturers would take very different directions in design and construction. The idea was for a tough shell that wouldn’t leak, with interior walls in GRP and a composite-material framework. It got mixed reactions, but paved the way for the next-generation Bailey ranges. We came across a later model, the GT65, which was launched to celebrate Bailey’s 65th anniversary. Spec for the original Pegasus line-up was good – alarm, blown-air heating, ATC, and heavy-duty corner steadies at the rear. By 2013, the Pegasus was on Mk3, with the GT65 offering extra…

Meet the dealers Teesside Caravans Teesside Caravans, based in Thornaby, claims the largest indoor display area in the country, at 250,000 sq ft. Pretty impressive, given that it only started selling caravans in 2011, specialising in new Adria, Bailey and Swift models. Before it started selling caravans, the company had been storing them for 20 years, and now has capacity for 1000 units. The dealership finds there is a good crossover between storage and sales, and the ratio of new vans it sells is higher than average. 1 Put the water, sugar, spices, treacle and golden syrup into a saucepan and bring slowly to a simmer, stirring regularly. Do not let it boil furiously or stick to the sides of the pan. 2 Once it’s all combined, take it off the heat and add your chopped butter, stirring continuously until it has all melted in. Allow the mixture to cool slightly. Sprinkle the bicarbonate of soda into the bottom of a large bowl and pour the warm mixture on top. Use a wooden spoon to mix the bicarb in thoroughly and then stir in the flour. Way to go If you’re heading north, the M1 is the most direct route, although you’re bound to find roadworks en route. When to go This part of Yorkshire isn’t a huge tourist trap, so whatever time of year you decide to visit, you shouldn’t come across too many crowds. What do you think makes this campsite one of our Regional Winners? We are a family-oriented park. We see the owners, the Maguire family, a lot; their values are projected and kept through our staff, right down to the cleaners. This is a job-for-life sort of place. How does it work with a large static area and the section for tourers? WE WERE HEADING for Haltwhistle in Northumberland, which sits alongside the northernmost edge of the Roman Empire, a frontier marked out by Hadrian’s Wall. For us, this would not be a long drive south, and on the recommendation of friends, we stopped off at Gretna Green. While there, we did a little shopping at the Gateway Retail Outlet, but it was far too busy for our tastes, so we decided to look elsewhere for lunch. THE FINAL MODEL in Swift’s new luxury 8ft-wide Elegance Grande range was one of the star attractions at October’s Motorhome and Caravan Show at the NEC. The Elegance Grande 655 – which wasn’t ready to be unveiled at the time of the Swift season launch in July – includes an unusual wall bed that drops down at the rear end of the very large L-shaped front lounge. THERE HAVE BEEN any number of times when I’ve arrived at a pitch, only to be confronted by awning pegs still in the ground, left there by previous occupants. Having hammered in their pegs, they find that they can’t get them out when they are ready to depart, so they just give up and leave them behind. The pegs are invariably in the way for the next occupants of the pitch, and the main option has been to hammer them right into the ground until they are flush.
