Weaker market sends tourer brands to extremes A WEAKER MARKET for caravan sales in the past few months seems to have led caravan manufacturers to refresh ranges at opposite ends of the market to boost sales. Swift, Erwin Hymer UK and Coachman are among those who have sought to breathe life into the luxury end of the market, while Bailey’s new Phoenix product replaces its current entry-level Pursuit range. This comes as figures from the NCC show new caravan sales in the three months to May consistently lagging behind the same period last year, with sales for May being almost 700 units behind May 2017. AL-KO’S UNDERSLUNG spare wheel carrier was a revolution. Before, most spare wheels (if the caravan had one) were mounted in the front locker. I had a couple of vans with this arrangement, and I dread to think what the noseweight was. Occasionally, a manufacturer would come up with something; for example, Avondale stored spares in a well under the floor, but none of these ideas lasted. Al-Ko’s solution did address the problem of where to store the spare wheel, and being mounted directly behind the axle, had very little effect on weight distribution. Caravans get cooler Truma is launching a compact air-conditioning system designed for smaller caravans at this year’s Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf this August. The 27.5kg Truma Aventa still manages to deliver 1700W of cooling power and because it only takes up 2.8A of current, should still be usable on parks with relatively limited fuseboxes. The machine also has a sleep function with reduced fan operation for a quieter night, and can be linked to Truma iNet. Over the past few weeks, however, I have been using it to zip up and down the country to go to various caravan manufacturers’ new season launches – and that has provided an opportunity to assess it for its day-to-day driving qualities as well. They’re simply the best WE ARE MASSIVE fans of the family-owned Tebay Services on the M6, and thought it was a huge shame when it closed down the campsite there. Tebay, which is on a list of six best UK service stations compiled by Mercedes-Benz, offers visitors a farm shop selling local produce and a great gift shop. Topping the list is Cornwall Services on the A30 near Bodmin, which has installed dedicated caravan parking and showers. The new Duster is barely any pricier than the old car, but the rough edges have been smoothed over. To begin with, buyers have a choice of petrol and diesel engines, both with 113bhp. Founders Mark and Anne Pinder started out with Coachman and Adria, but in 2011, took on Explorer Group brands. Demand for them grew so strongly that within a couple of years, it became a sole Explorer Group dealer. They still sell the entire range of what is now Erwin Hymer UK, but partly because they do not offer dealer specials, they specialise in vans at the top end of that offering – the Elddis Crusader range, and Buccaneer. THE SAGA OF our caravan purchase continues. If you remember, last month we had a near miss with a secondhand caravan scam, which could have resulted in our hard-earned money supporting the GDP of some far-flung despotic regime.
