Overseas investment is welcome news So, another famous name in UK caravanning passes into foreign ownership. Coachman’s acquisition by Kabe follows what was the Explorer Group (comprising Xplore, Elddis, Compass and Buccaneer) being sold to the Erwin Hymer Group in 2017. Widen your view to include motorhomes and the tally of takeovers is even higher. But it is, I think, a good sign. Kabe, which first took a stake in Coachman two years ago, is clearly impressed with what it sees. Seat hasn’t rewritten the rulebook in updating the Ateca. High-tech driver aids and connected services don’t transform the everyday experience of driving the car. However, we’re pleased that Seat hasn’t gone too far in following the current trend for dashboard designs that are almost button-free. It’s the way the Ateca drives that appeals most. Choosing a Layout People’s needs differ, and your layout choice will depend on your companions and how you want to use your caravan. To understand which layouts are available, spend a day at one of the big shows, where manufacturers and dealers will be showing their latest models. A dealership is also a good place to start, but can be affiliated with a limited number of manufacturers. A chat with a dealer, though, could raise issues or offer ideas you hadn’t considered. Think about your needs: will you want to carry bikes, sports kit, barbecues or outdoor furniture? A caravan with a huge number of bunk beds can sometimes start to feel a little like a dormitory. But with all of those bunks tucked away at the back, as in this layout, they are partitioned off from the rest of the van by the central washroom, so the front lounge feels like any other front lounge. Follow the roadmap to freedom With the vaccination programme on schedule and early indications showing a reduction in cases, we can be tentatively optimistic about the future. The key date on the roadmap out of lockdown is 21 June, when all limits to social contact should be removed, assuming we have met the conditions for doing so. If all goes well, from 17 May, up to 10,000 spectators will be able to attend larger outdoor seated venues, such as stadiums. Find a good dealer to get the right van Interest in caravanning continues to grow, which means stock remains scarce — family-sized models are particularly sought after, I’m told by dealers. One dealer I visited (before lockdown) had a row of two-berths, but no family tourers. He told me many are being sold privately. Although private sales have their place, first-time buyers could be buying themselves trouble, not knowing the potential problems to look out for. My advice is to find a local dealer, who can offer support and make sure models are sold in the right condition for the money. WE ALL LOVE caravanning, but not every caravanner loves towing. Here are some of our favourite tips to make towing safer and more enjoyable. 1 Play the percentages You probably know what’s coming next. The 85% ‘rule’ has been the caravanner’s friend for decades. Both major caravanning clubs recommend towing no more than 85% of the kerbweight of your tow car, especially if you are new to towing. It’s a strong recommendation rather than a legal requirement, but you’ll find car and caravan more stable if the car weighs substantially more than the van. Experienced caravanners may be happy towing up to 100% of the car’s kerbweight, but we’d never recommend going above this weight, even if the car’s legal towing limit is higher. WHEN WE BEGAN touring back in 2017, we were happy to just jump in and go, without too much thought about what we would pack to take with us. Obviously we included the essentials, such as food, clothes and our then two-year-old son, but outside of that, we had an attitude of ‘what we don’t have with us, we can do without’. THE A350 BEGINS its route at the M4’s junction 17, heading south before it turns right onto the Chippenham Bypass. The road bypasses the time-warp picturesque village of Lacock, and continues on to the small market town of Melksham, avoiding the town centre. It then bypasses Trowbridge to the east, passing West Ashton and turning at Yarnbrook to head through the market town of Westbury, on the edge of Salisbury Plain. From here, the route skirts around the edge of Warminster Down, then connects with the A36 to bypass Warminster. Camping and Caravanning Club appoints new chair Phil Henson, a caravanner from Nottinghamshire, has become The Camping and Caravanning Club’s new chairman, following an election for the position held in February. He replaces Bob Talbot, who had held the post since December 2018. Mr Henson, who has been an active club member for more than 30 years and ha fulfilled roles on many of its committees, said, “I love the people, the friendliness and the enthusiasm of The Camping and Caravanning Club. Rear corner beds are commonly known as French beds, for reasons that are becoming rather lost in the mists of time! They do take up less room than an island bed, so are quite a happy compromise if one of you is prepared to clim b over the other to get out of bed at night.
