The mobile studio plays a key role in the history of photography. In the mid-19th century, ‘ambulant photographers’ would travel from town to town. Later the practice was embraced by a host of famous photographers. Perhaps the most captivating examples come from Irving Penn, who travelled the world with his Rolleiflex camera and northlight studio, photographing mud-masked men in New Guinea and hippies in San Francisco. 01 POSITION THE LIGHT You can create a moody, low-key lighting set-up almost anywhere, even in a field during daylight. Set the flash to full power and bring the light in as close as possible to the subject. Here the light was almost touching the sheep’s nose; fortunately, he didn’t seem to mind… 02 UNDEREXPOSE DAYLIGHT At this range and power, the flash is far brighter when it goes off than the surrounding natural daylight; so if you expose for the flash, the surrounding daylight actually has minimal impact on our image. 1 THREE-LIGHT SET-UP Our farmyard studio set-up consists of three lights, although only the key light on the right was required for some shots. We set up in a barn not far from the chicken coop and goat stables. This way, we could grab an animal and take a few shots, then let them wander off back to their friends. 2 PLAIN BACKDROP A roll of grey vinyl fixed to two light stands makes a simple, effective backdrop. Vinyl is sturdier than paper and is less likely to kink or crease – and it can be wiped clean after the shoot. A profile photo like this is a great way to capture a group of people or animals. We capture each subject individually – taking care to keep the camera angle and lighting consistent throughout – then combine the set of photos into a single frame that cleverly showcases the similarities and differences between each face. To shoot for this, we use a single light, positioned to the side and behind the face. The light is angled back towards the camera so that it kisses the edges of the profile. This way, the near side of the subject is kept in deep shade, which not only makes for punchy, dramatic lighting, but also makes it much easier to combine the images in Photoshop afterwards without the viewer being able to spot…

01 POSITIONING ANIMALS It helps to have an assistant around to get the animal into position and keep them calm so that you can concentrate on focusing and composing the shot. Lots of animals suit a side-on or three-quarters angle to the face: their profiles are often more striking than a straight-on view. 02 CALM ON THE FARM Get the animals calm before you shoot, and make sure you turn off beeps on the flash or camera. Use food to entice animals into position and to reward them afterwards. Photoshop has many types of layers and adjustment layers available, but there are six that you’ll find you need to use again and again. Learning how they should be used may seem a little daunting for beginners, but once you’ve got to grips with them, you’ll find they play a part in the creative process of almost every image you make. 01 LEVELS This should be the first layer you add to an image, because it fundamentally alters the tonal range of the entire image.
