The most common sign that a pet is experiencing joint pain is lameness, or putting less or no weight on the affected limb, explains Kimberly Agnello, D.V.M., an associate professor of small-animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. But depending on the cause, pets may also seem less playful, move more slowly, or have difficulty climbing stairs, adds Jamie Richardson, D.V.M., head of veterinary medicine at Small Door Veterinary.
