While a new X System mirrorless digital medium format camera was half expected to show up at Photokina (it’s still coming, we’re told), instead Hasselblad continued to expand the XCD lens range, announcing three models which will all be available from December this year. These will bring the X System up to nine lenses. The first of the newcomers is the XCD 80mm f1.9, the fastest lens Hasselblad has ever made, and able to deliver an extremely shallow depth-of-field for enhanced creativity with focus effects. In fact, it’s the fastest medium format lens ever, too. The focal length is equivalent to 63 mm in the 35mm format so this lens will be very popular with portrait photographers in particular. Lens maker SIGMA has confirmed that all its current models will work with the Nikon FTZ mount adaptor for Nikon Z series mirrorless camera bodies. Full functionality is retained and no firmware upgrades are required. However, Sigma says that some its older lenses which already didn’t work on Nikon’s current D-SLR also, logically, won’t work on the Z cameras. Conversely, there are an increasing number of reports that many of the current Tamron F mount lenses won’t work with the FTZ adapter. This is also our experience, having tried the new 70-210mm f4.0 and 17-35mm f2.8-4.0 models on the Z 7 body which promptly went into ‘Error’ mode. Tamron has acknowledged there are compatibility issues and says it is investigating them to determine the required solutions. Everything old is new…

Epson says it has committed to becoming consistent with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. As part of this effort, Epson has created “Key CSR Themes”, a materiality matrix which identifies important initiatives for addressing social issues. Epson examined the relationship between its initiatives and the 169 targets of the 17 SDGs to identify the SDGs which intersect with the company’s initiatives. President of Seiko Epson Corporation, Minoru Usui, commented, “Epson is using its original efficient, compact, and precision technologies and initiatives as vehicles to drive innovations that will enrich the world and make it a better place. Owners of Nikon D-SLRs could be forgiven for thinking they’ve been a bit neglected by lens-maker Samyang of late… its last few new autofocus models being exclusively for the Canon EF mount. The good news is that Samyang has just released its first AF lens for full-35mm format Nikon D-SLRs, an F mount version of the AF 14mm f2.8 ultra-wide prime. As with the Canon EF model, the F mount 14mm f2.8 provides Nikon D-SLR owners with an affordable alternative to the camera-branded model, in this case the AF Nikkor 14mm f2.8 ED. Externally, the barrel construction employs metal tubes with sealing against the intrusion of dust and moisture, including a rubber gasket around the lens mount. Sister publication Australian Camera has announced the winning imaging products in its annual Camera Magazine Imaging Awards. The winners were revealed during the Camera House annual gala dinner and presentations which, this year, were held on Sydney Harbour aboard the Bella Vista. The Camera House retail group has been a sponsor of the awards for the last five years. Nikon was the big winner this year, collecting awards in three of the 12 product categories, including what’s expected to be the first of many around the world over the coming months for its Z 7 full-35mm format mirrorless camera. There are essentially two lines of Fujifilm’s Instax Square Instant cameras – the classical analog-only currently represented by the SQ6, and the hybrid analog/digital models represented by the SQ10 and now the new SQ20 which was launched at Photokina 2018. The hybrid cameras capture the image digitally and there’s then the option to print it out on the Instax Square film, either with or without some in-camera editing beforehand. The SQ20 is similar in styling and design to the SQ10 (which continues to be available), including dual left- and right-hand shutter releases, and a built-in flash. The 37th Nikon Photo Contest is open for entries from now until 3:00pm on 31 January 2019 (Australian Eastern Standard Time). Since the first contest was held in 1969, more than 410,000 photographers from around the world have submitted over 1,620,000 images. The 36th (2016-2017) contest attracted 76,356 works from 21,511 photographers in 170 countries and regions. This marked a new record for the competition in terms of the number of countries from which submissions were made. For the 2018-2019 contest, art director Neville Brody – who is CEO of Brody Associates – has been appointed lead judge, having also held this position in the previous competition. Tamron is continuing its ‘Generation 2’ upgrade program for its high-performance SP series lenses with a new version of its 15-30mm f2.8 ultra-wide zoom for full-35mm format D-SLRs. The new SP 15-30mm f2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041) incorporates a revised external design, optical construction, image stabilisation and autofocusing drive. Perth-based photographer Chris Saunders has been judged the AIPPs 2018 Australian Professional Photographer Of The Year. He won the prestigious title with a portfolio of four abstract aerial landscape images which also earned him the title of 2018 AIPP Australian Professional Photographer Of The Year. “What I really enjoy about aerial landscapes is it allows you to see things from new perspectives and explore new areas”, he explains. “Aerial images challenge the viewer to look at our landscape and see what is going on around us... A single card slot is provided for SD format devices, but has both UHS I and UHS-II speed support. With the sensor highly exposed when a lens isn’t fitted, Canon’s solution is to automatically close the FP shutter when the EOS R is switched off. Simple, but highly effective. CANON MUST HAVE FACED A bit of dilemma here as its EOS 5D Mark IV is as popular with videographers as photographers and so still a very strong seller… but mirrorless is made for video shooting. So how far to go with the EOS R? The end result suggests that nobody was quite sure of the answer to this question and so the EOS R is a bit of a mixed bag here, but it has to be said, less so than the 5D IV. The big plus, of course, is that it’s a mirrorless camera so it’s both more compact and lighter weight, but also more convenient to use. Samyang’s manual-focus 85mm f1.8 fast short telephoto is available in the Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon M ‘APS-C’ format mirrorless mounts, plus Micro Four Thirds for Olympus and Panasonic. The effective focal length on the ‘APS-C’ cameras is 127.5mm, while on M43 cameras it’s 170mm. Officially designated the 85mm f1.8 ED UMC CS, the new lens has a nine-element optical construction (in seven groups) which includes one with extra-low dispersion (ED) characteristics and one high-refractive index type.
