Does marketing drive the market or does the market drive the marketing? I was reminded of this question while testing the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III for this issue. The accepted wisdom at present is that the interchangeable lens camera (ILC) market will be predominantly mirrorless in the not-too-distant future. What makes a compelling photograph? Sometimes the content will be enough, but often it’s how the content is arranged within the frame – the composition – that makes all the difference. It’s perhaps not so surprising that there’s been a fascination with 3D photography since the earliest days because it’s the third dimension – depth – that has a significant influence on how we see the world around us and interpret its contents. Now in its 55th year, the Wildlife Photographer Of The Year competition is the premier showcase for the world’s best nature and wildlife photography. The competition is run by London’s Natural History Museum and this year attracted more than 48,000 entries from photographers in 100 countries. In addition to the 19 main categories, the Lumix People’s Choice Awards has become a popular element of the competition with 25 finalists vying for the top prize. As the name suggests, the winner – plus four highly commended images – is selected by visitors to the exhibition at London’s Natural History Museum. Growing up as a kid in Hawaii I was fascinated by surfing movies and, in the early 1960s, there was a guy called Val Valentine who came out with four surf movies. Basically they were home movies, but nothing like anyone else’s. A friend of mine ended up getting Val’s films and, later, Derek Hynd and myself bought them. I started looking into Val Valentine. Who was he? And where did he come from? He wasn’t a surfer. “Val came to Hawaii in the late 1950s and gets a job as a commentator, writer and a photographer for the 50th State Wrestling that was a big deal in back then.
