Podcasting Microphones Clearly, for a speech-driven form of media, you’re going to need a microphone. Mics come in all different shapes and sizes, all offering slightly different possibilities. For podcasting, however, we’d point you in the direction of a good-quality, well-made condenser mic. A popular option is to use USB condensers, on account of their simplicity, but professionals might prefer the flexibility of dedicated broadcast microphones. Larger setups, involving multiple guests, will probably be better served with better quality studio microphones. If you’re recording in your kitchen or bedroom, you are at the mercy of all those extra sounds a typical house will make. Sony has stuck with big pixels for the third-generation video-orientated A7S series full-frame mirrorless camera. The A7S III has an all-new, backside illuminated Exmore R sensor with an effective resolution of 12.1 megapixels (12.9MP total), which means a dynamic range of 15+ stops and sensitivity that can be wound up to the equivalent of ISO 409,600. The camera’s newly developed Bionz XR processor – which Sony says is eight times more powerful than the Bionz X engine – enables 4K UHD recording internally at up to 100/120fps and with 10-bit 4:2:2 colour. For the first time on an Alpha-series mirrorless camera, the A7S III can output 4K RAW video (via an HDMI Type A connector) at 50/60fps with 16-bit colour sampling (and recorded using the full sensor width too). Owners of Fujifilm’s X mount or G mount mirrorless cameras now have some new flash products to consider. The EF-60 is a new on-camera flash unit with a metric guide number of 60 (ISO 100), an auto zoom flash head – covering the angles-of-view of 24mm to 200mm (35mm equivalent) – and a white LED modelling light. The EF-60 also supports HSS (high-speed flash) sync, which uses a pulsed output to enable flash photography with shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 second. It also allows for RF remote control and triggering using the Nissin Air System (NAS), so Fujifilm has also released the EF-W1 wireless commander unit. Canon’s upgrading of its photo printer line-up continues with the arrival of the PIXMA PRO-200 A3+ format model which replaces the PIXMA PRO-100S. Aimed at both professionals and enthusiast-level photographers, the PRO-200 arrives hot on the heels of the A3+ format PRO-300, which replaces the PRO-10S and has the imagePROGRAF branding because of its much higher level of spec and capabilities. The compact PRO-200 has an eight-colour dye-based ink set (versus the PRO-300’s ten pigmented inks) with new formulations for the magenta and black to the given expanded colour gamut for reds and blues, along with enhanced reproduction of blacks while also increasing the black densities. The printer delivers borderless printing up to A3+ on a wide variety of media types and surface finishes, including fine-art papers up to 0.6…

This is arguably just as interesting a product as the EOS R5, and it’s a further indication of Canon’s growing emphasis on its RF lens mount. The EOS C70 is the first Canon Cinema EOS camera to have the RF mount, but it’s also interesting for other reasons, including a new and very compact (comparatively speaking) form factor and price tag that's likely to lure video-makers away from any of Canon’s mirrorless cameras or DSLRs. Just as it did with the very first – and very momentous – EOS interchangeable lens camera launch back in 1986, Canon has unveiled two new EOS models simultaneously. But this is 2020 and we’re talking about the next stage in the development of Canon’s EOS R full-35mm format mirrorless camera system. However, it believes the new pro-level EOS R5 (and its enthusiast-level sibling, the EOS R6), represents a “new era” which is certainly true in terms of Canon’s ability to compete much more aggressively in this sector… primarily with the ‘interlopers’, Panasonic and Sony. For many working photographers, the DSLR-versus-mirrorless argument boils down to lenses – an existing tried-and-tested system (probably representing a considerable investment) versus the promised benefits derived from the shorter flange back distance. Consequently, it’s not surprising that lens systems feature prominently in the promotion and marketing of mirrorless cameras. As most current DSLR users will either be using Canon or Nikon, all are accustomed to having extensive choices of lenses to choose from, both from the camera brands and the independents. The latter often have more affordable pricing as an added incentive. In essence, as far as the Canon EF/EF-S and Nikon F lens mounts are concerned, every application and budget is catered for. If you thought the standard Alpha series full-frame cameras were compact – and they are compared to any of the competition – just wait until you see the Alpha 7C (a.k.a. ILCE-A7C). It’s full frame – using the same sensor as the A7 III – with in-body image stabilisation, a fully adjustable monitor, and an extensive suite of both photo and video features all shoe-horned into a body similar in both size and weight to the APS-C format A6600. The key to the size reduction is a monocoque-type construction that combines the chassis and body into a single magnesium alloy component (and, incidentally, makes it easier to seal against the intrusion of moisture or dust). Nikon’s fourth Z mount mirrorless camera, the Z 5, becomes the entry-level full-frame format body. It’s selling for roughly $600 less than the Z 6, so it has polycarbonate back and bottom plates – rather than a full magnesium alloy construction – but it’s still weather sealed. The top panel info display on the two higher-end models has been re-placed by the traditional mode dial, but this is likely to be a plus for some po-tential buyers. A change of ownership may be happening soon, but Olympus is still busy launching new products. The first of the OM-D line of Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras to reach its fourth-generation version is the entry-level E-M10. The E-M10 Mark IV keeps the same compact body as its predecessor, but is now even lighter and steps up to a 20.3 megapixels LiveMOS sensor. It still uses the TruePic VIII generation engine, but there have been a number of improvements to specifications, including extend IBIS correction to 4.5 stops, and up to 15fps continuous shooting with the camera’s electronic shutter.
