One of my Covid-era stay-at-home-activities has been editing the forthcoming magnum opus, A Few Of The Legends, by photographer Peter Adams. It’s a 600+ page book that’s been 36-odd years in the making and includes many of the most famous names in 20th-century photography that Peter has managed to interview and photograph. It’s been a mammoth project that, in addition to all that time, has cost close to $500,000 to produce, involved around 250,000 kilometres of travel (much of it overseas) and generated 42,000 film negatives (plus countless digital files). Panasonic has introduced a series of \ firmware updates for the Lumix DC-S1H (Version 2.2), S1R (Version 1.6), S1 (Version 1.6) and S5 (Version 2.0), plus the DC-G100 (Version 1.1) mirrorless cameras. For the Lumix S series cameras the upgrades include adding head recognition to the AF detection capabilities and improved tracking with small or fast-moving subjects. The S1R gains 5K video recording in the MOV format with 10-bit 4:2:0 colour, while the S5 gets C4K recording with the option of 10-bit 4:2:2 colour plus a number of other video enhancements, including a RAW video output via HDMI. Last year, Panasonic revealed it was planning a line-up of four fast prime lenses in the full frame L mount, all identical in size and all with a maximum aperture of f/1.8. The first of these – the Lumix S 85mm f/1.8 is now available – and the three to come are a 24mm, a 35mm and a 50mm. Also on way is an S series 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom. The 85mm f/1.8 has a compact design, measuring just 82mm in length and weighing 355 grams. It features a weather-sealed construction that includes insulation to allow shooting in subzero temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. Established in 1973 by photographers David Moore and Wes Stacey to promote photography and photographic education, the Australian Centre For Photography (ACP) has closed due to a severe decline in revenue caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the ineligibility for any on-going government funding. Income from its workshops program – one of the few left in Australia to include film-based subjects – had been falling steadily since 2011, while many students of photography had elected to study at either TAFE or university, which offer more comprehensive courses. In 2015, the ACP was forced to sell its gallery space on Oxford Street in the inner-Sydney suburb of Paddington and move to a smaller, rented facility in nearby Darlinghurst. There’s nothing like a dip into the archives to reveal just how much things have changed in the professional photography industry, especially over the last couple of decades. In the early 1970s medium and large format cameras were considered the only choice for professionals, especially for studio work. And black-and-white film was still in extensive use for many applications. Fujifilm has added an interesting new model to its X mount line-up of APS-C mirrorless cameras. The X-S10 essentially represents a new category of bodies designed to appeal to users who still want a higher-end feature set, but prefer a more compact camera with a less classical user interface. Fujifilm. describes it as a cross between the X-T30 and the X-H1, giving you some idea of the different combination of capabilities, form factor and pricing. There’s no doubt that Fujifilm is targeting DSLR users here, hence the adoption – for the first time aon an X mount body – of a conventional PASM main mode dial. The X mount 10-24mm f/4.0 wide-angle zoom (equivalent to 15-36mm) has proved popular with users of Fujifilm’s APS-C format mirrorless cameras, but being a comparatively early model, it was ready for an update. The new version – now called the Fujinon XF 10-24mm f/4.0 R OIS WR – incorporates a number of significant improvements, starting with a weather-sealed construction that also allows for shooting in subzero temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. Given all the higher-end X series camera have the same level of weather protection, this corrects the limitations of the earlier model. Overall, the new lens has a slimmer and more compact design, plus it’s also 25 grams lighter than before, now weighing 385 grams. Over 3,800 entries from around the world were submitted to the seventh International Landscape Photographer Of The Year awards, which were open to both amateur and professional photographers. There are two major prizes – the International Landscape Photographer Of The Year award was judged on a portfolio of four images, while the International Landscape Photograph Of The Year award recognised the best single image submitted to the competition. Additionally, there are five special awards based on popular landscape themes – Dark And Moody, Amazing Aerial, Snow & Ice, Night Sky and Incredible Horizon. Nikon has fine-tuned the D6’s video capabilities compared to the D5 rather than making any significant upgrades. So there’s now the choice of the MOV or MP4 formats (with MPEG-4/H.264 AVC encoding) for better matching the output to the application, the much-missed focus-peaking display is provided, external N.Log recording is supported and a 10-bit 4:2:2 colour output is available via HDMI. There’s also a time-lapse movie function for 2K or 4K clips.
