Listening to excerpts of John Cage Shock, Yoko Ono’s 1962 performance with John Cage and David Tudor, at her Music Of The Mind exhibition in London has put us in the mood for the latest Experimental column, which begins with percussionist-composer-producer Amy Aileen Wood’s The Heartening (Colorfield). With upright and electric bass, autoharp and sax in the mix, Wood uses a wide range of instruments from trad rock kit to kalimba, gamelan and various synths in this jazzy, smoky collection that also features her collaborator, acclaimed US singer Fiona Apple, on several tracks, breathing, humming, laughing in a very Yoko way at times. At the intersection of hip-hop, electronica, jazz and rock, kindred mixing-it-up spirits are Kassa Overall and Luke Vibert.
Appearing, at times, under the name Pulse Emitter, Portland…
