Because it is Christmas time when we start working on the issue and chances are good we might have snow on the ground during the photoshoot! He was born in a small farming community on December 24th, 1918. Yes, during the Spanish flu pandemic! His mother—my grandmother—taught my mom to hand quilt. I am always trying to expand my design skills in new ways. When I design, I typically start with a line of fabric or a quilt block, maybe keeping a theme in mind. It can be a stretch for me to design with precuts. 1. Cut two squares 7/8" larger than desired finished size of triangle-square. 2. On wrong side of one square, mark diagonal line from corner to corner.This will be your cutting line. Mark sewing lines ¼" away from each side of cutting line. 3. Place marked square on top of other square, right sides facing. Sew along marked sewing lines. 4. Cut along marked cutting line. 5. Portable Patchwork: The Women Pioneers of the Original Quick & Easy Quilting Method, with Projects for Today by Pamela Weeks Schiffer Publishing, 2021 If you are inspired by antique quilts, this is the book for you. In this book, Pamela Weeks focuses on the quilt-as-you-go technique she refers to as “potholder quilts” where the edges are completely finished before stitching the blocks together. I have been playing with this block with five Flying Geese for a good while. The Flying Geese unit shows up in many quilts. There are several popular techniques used to make it. You can make one at a time or four at a time. The Flying Geese would even make a great beginner paper-pieced block. This unit is certainly one to master. The quilt pattern has a plain alternate block and one large Flying Geese unit that would be great places to play with fussy cutting or fancy quilting. The name for this design, Goose Tracks, came loosely from an audiobook I recently enjoyed, The Beach House by Mary Alice Monroe. My granddaughter loves elephants and had an elephant lovey, “Ellie”, that she carried with her everywhere. When I saw this fabric, I immediately thought she would love it. It reminded me of the elephants I had seen in circuses and how they would parade around the ring, tail to tail, or dancing trunk to trunk. The Snails Trail block immediately came to mind and I set to work creating. 2-3 lbs. boneless skinless chicken breasts ½ cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce (store bought or homemade) plus more for serving Mix vinegar and BBQ sauce together. Place chicken in slow cooker. Pour sauce mixture over the top of chicken. Cook chicken 3½-4 hours on high, or 6-8 hours on low, until the internal temperature reaches 165° F. Remove chicken from slow cooker. Let rest about 15 minutes. Slice into large chunks then shred with two forks. Place chicken back in slow cooker with cooking sauce to keep warm. I wondered if two coordinating yet contrasting 10" squares plus a background fabric would provide enough fabric to make a traditional block. I sketched a block I thought would work and tried it using the 10" squares. The block was quick and easy, and I love the effect. This design is a fantastic way to use nearly all the squares in a layer cake to make a sizeable quilt! Nothing is more frustrating than borders that won’t lay flat. When you are combining pieced borders with regular borders, as in Trunk Show, all it takes is to be a needle-width off in your piecing for your borders to be too short or waving from too much length. Luckily, there is an easy way to check your measurements to make sure your borders fit every time and it works for any size quilt with squared borders. While the borders in Trunk Show are a little atypical, using this technique to measure your borders prior to cutting will ensure your borders all fit nicely. After assembling the quilt center, join strips end to end (if necessary) to create enough length for the side borders. Fold the quilt top in half along…
