Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Pressing tabs indicate the direction to press the seam allowances. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances. But over the last year, my exploration of color theory has resulted in a quilty progression from monochromatic to colorful—while remaining graphic and linear. I also love using gradients of color to create a three-dimensional effect. The quilt reminds me of the ‘whirlybirds’ that fall from the trees. These are actually called samara, and the seed is encapsulated and dispersed in the wind. It’s like creating windows into different layers of color without actually using transparent fabrics. The illusion of transparency is achieved when colors or values seemingly overlap to create a new color or value. In this design, for example, medium green is placed between two areas of light green to create the illusion that the two light greens overlap. Ever since childhood, Amy Struckmeyer (she/her) has explored textiles. Early Waldorf School lessons in knitting, weaving, and sewing set her on the path, and her later work in architecture influenced her creative process and design work. She’s written close to 50 sewing and quilting patterns for various publications. In February 2024, Amy gave her lecture, “Reframe Your Color Story,” to a packed house at QuiltCon, the annual conference of the Modern Quilt Guild. Her original quilt, “Deconstructed Lonestar,” won an award at QuiltCon in 2015 —and is now part of the Modern Quilt Guild Collection of the International Quilt Museum. If you are into the modern quilting aesthetic, you probably have a generous stash, too. The blocks in my design are super simple paper-pieced blocks in three sizes.
