Emma Anderson is best known as the co-founder of Lush and, later, Sing-Sing and is one of the most underrated songwriters to emerge from the era that encompassed shoegaze and Britpop. Paul Rodgers has enjoyed a reasonably quiet life since 2009, when he bid an amicable farewell to the Queen + Paul Rodgers collaboration that had taken him around the world over the previous four years. “Quiet” is a relative term, of course: the last 14 years have seen him tour as a solo artist and with his old band Bad Company, play tribute shows to his even older band Free, and release albums of his own and in collaboration with others – but he's nowhere near as often in the public eye as he was in the first decade of the 2000s. Billy Bragg on fame, songwriting – and the chance of a mega encore. This is one hell of a collection. How involved in it were you? I was the person who had to verify everything! Shankar Across a career spanning more than five decades, Indian violinist and singer Lakshminarayana Shankar, known variously as L Shankar, Shenkar, or just Shankar (due to record company stipulations), has featured on a wealth of recordings across a remarkable spectrum of genres, often fusing traditional Eastern modes with Western forms of expression. A virtuoso violinist and remarkable singer with a five-octave vocal range, he's collaborated with musicians ranging from Phil Collins and The Pretenders to Bill Laswell, Talking Heads and Frank Zappa. Free Fire And Water (1970) Free wrote some great songs before their third album appeared in 1970, it's true, but it's impossible to deny the greatness of Fire And Water's career-best single All Right Now. In Hearing Of (★★★ Music On Vinyl) followed their biggest hit, Devil's Answer, which in 1971 was a top-five hit. Their lineup was in flux however, with the recruitment of vocalist Pete French causing a rift between those who had played on 1970's pounding Death Walks Behind You. The resulting album was less gnarly than its predecessor. Nor did it chart as highly, despite the attempt at greater accessibility. Throughout his all-too-short tenure with the band, Lake turned in some of his finest vocal masterclasses, and with Epitaph he injects the perfect level of pathos into every word as it builds to a tumultuous climax of muffled kettledrums and a swirling fusillade of mellotrons. FRANKIE LAINE A decade before The Beatles’ American invasion, a barrelchested Chicagoan mounted a siege of the British charts unprecedented in its intensity. Between March 1953 and October 1954, Frankie Laine placed 11 singles in the UK Top 10, three of them No Is. Across 1953 alone, he spent 27 weeks in the top slot.
