So says my aunt Maria Monay, who befriended him for a short time when her career collided with his in Mexico. The studio filming The Sun Also Rises was throwing a birthday party for Tyrone Power, one of the stars of the movie. Maria was working in Mexico as a model at the time and was invited to attend. She lined up with the well-wishers to offer birthday greetings to the guest of honor. In 1970, Donny Osmond, co-lead of The Osmonds, was a year away from his solo No. 1 hit, “Go Away Little Girl,” and becoming a young megastar. Justin Timberlake became a teen idol in the 1990s as part of the boy band NSYNC. Both have proved to be resilient performers, growing out of their bubblegum stardom to develop successful careers as adults. Yes, that was me, a lifeguard. It was the summer of 1959, I was 18 and I’d just been hired at a private beach in Darien, Connecticut. It was a small beach with a pier and a swim platform for jumping or diving. The beach was used exclusively by the residents of the 60 or so homes in the immediate area. There was nothing to the job. All I had to do was sit in the sun and watch for swimmers in distress. I had absolutely no certification to be a lifeguard, but I was a good swimmer. Edsel dealers used turquoise-and-white promos in the test-drive giveaway. Aluminum Model Toys Inc. (AMT), a toy manufacturer, made Edsel promos in a variety of factory colors for dealer use but switched up color combinations or treatments on cars sold in toy stores. AMT built convertible and two-door hardtop promos for all three Edsel model years: 1958, 1959 (shown) and 1960. Today, the 1960 Edsel promos can run more than $100 apiece. An average-condition turquoise 1958 coupe, the most common, can garner $30–$35; other colors bring around $60. Promotional models in unusual colors can bring $300–$400.…

Family history research goes beyond names and dates on a piece of paper. Life stories accompany each of those names. Think about the changes these people saw in their lifetimes. During our two-week stay, we visited two major Southern California theme parks: Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland. Knott’s Berry Farm, with its country and western theme, was noted for its authentic Ghost Town. I had fun riding on a four-horse-drawn stagecoach, petting a pack mule and pretending to ride in cars at the kid-sized town. Although witnessing what I thought was a live gunfight in the streets of Ghost Town between the sheriff and some desperadoes might have frightened any 3-year-old, those encounters didn’t faze me. Several companies lay claim to the first promotional model, but the first 1/25-scale plastic models—the industry standard for decades—were Ford and Plymouth, in 1949. Prior to this, slush-cast models were growing in popularity in the late 1940s. Promos seem to have been most popular in the late ’50s, with different body styles and colors for almost every car line. By the early 1980s, promos had nearly died out, but the ’90s brought a revival, with 15-20 different cars being produced at one point. Today, just one promo is made: Corvette.…

I STOMPED BACK TO OUR BLANKET, WISHING I COULD JUST GO HOME. When I was 5, I got my first perm. I felt very grown-up sitting in my aunt’s barber chair. Her beauty shop smelled like hair spray, setting lotion, and everything I couldn’t wait to do when I grew up. Afterward, we all went to a nearby lake. I asked my mom if I could go in the water. “You can’t get your hair wet or you’ll ruin your perm,” she said. I promised to be careful. After I graduated with my teaching certification in June 1962, I was hired to teach American history and English at Miami Norland Senior High School in Miami, Florida. Digging in the dirt is a favorite summertime activity of mine. Evenings and weekends, you’ll find me weeding the flower beds or picking snow peas, lettuce and chard for a dinner salad. It’s fun to cook with food you’ve grown, and using vintage recipes that remind you of Mom’s cooking brings back such homey memories. Judy’s Macaroni Salad After finding this vintage recipe years ago, I tweaked the flavor and bumped up the pickles. Tuck a bowl inside your picnic basket. ELIZABETH KIRCHGATTER MAYSVILLE, KY INGREDIENTS 21/2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni 11/2 cups mayonnaise 1/4 cup sweet pickle juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 6 hard-cooked eggs, chopped 6 sweet pickles, chopped DIRECTIONS Cook macaroni according to the package directions. Drain macaroni; rinse with cold water and drain well. In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, pickle juice, salt and pepper. Stir in cheese, eggs and pickles. Add macaroni; toss gently to coat. Refrigerate, covered, at least 2 hours or until chilled. Serves 12.…

We both grew up in Mobile, Alabama, and entered Murphy High School in 1953 as freshmen. GLEN MALIN graduated from Fremont High School in Los Angeles in the winter of 1944. He was drafted into the Army but was allowed to graduate before being sent to basic training. LAWRENCE MALIN served in the Army from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific Islands. Upon returning home he used the GI Bill to become a doctor. JACK MALIN was a Los Angeles County fireman and joined the Army in 1942. He served in the African and European theaters until the end of the war in 1945, and was with the units that liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp.
