HOLLAND’S Nico Bakker is the couturier of chassis builders, the welding wizard who’s the man to consult when you want a high-class piece of hardware to wrap around a motor to create a unique bike that handles well and looks the business. PAUL Smart and Bruno Spaggiari were two of four riders contracted by Ducati to race an untried F750 racer in the 1972 Imola 200. The race bikes were based on the new 750 GT road bike but fitted with desmodromic valve-trains and tuned to suit. “They built 10 of them — two each for all four riders — plus two spares,” Smart says, along with a special glass-sided bus to transport them in. “That’s when I realised this was a very serious venture, by a company that was determined to win.” The brand-new bikes were rockets. POLLOCK is a big fan of the modern Hinckley Triumphs too, in particular the carburetted 790cc and 865cc twins made between 2001 and 2007. There are a million of them out there, with plenty of good ones around for sensible prices. TO LOOK at, Suzuki’s new SV650X isn’t the most in-your-face cafe racer on the market, but it impressed from the moment we fired it up. The clip-ons are in exactly the right place relative to the solo-style seat and slightly rear-set footpegs, and you sit low behind the tank. The bike is physically small and light and the engine has the correct number of cylinders. And as we soon found out, it also handles well, steers even better and goes like the clappers. THE KTM was commissioned by Robert Haas for the Haas Moto Museum in Dallas, Texas. A former investment banker, the 70-year-old born-again biker has put together one of the most impressive motorcycle collections in the US in less than four years. Haas’s timing and passion for custom bikes was perfect for Max Hazan. “Bobby is the man who kept the doors open when I was literally one day away from going back to a full-time job three years ago,” Max told Bike Exif. NICO Bakker set up his ‘bakery’ in 1976 to makes frames for TZ250/350 Yamahas. Early customers included Franco Uncini, Johnny Cecotto, Will Hartog and Takazumi Katayama, who rode his to the World 350GP Championship in 1977. “I was the first to fit monoshock rear suspension, which gave a big improvement in chassis behaviour, together with the better weight distribution and extra stiffness my frames had compared to the Japanese ones,” says Nico. He then turned his attention to the 500s, initially with RG500 Suzuki engines and later Honda RS500s. LAKE Gairdner is roughly equidistant between Sydney and Perth, and 230km north-west of Port Augusta in SA. The last 160km is dirt. Facilities at the popular lakeside Salt Bush Camp are primitive albeit cheap at $7 a night, and there is a canteen serving hot meals and cold beer. A PROTOTYPE for a street-going replica of the Dr John race bike appeared at the Milan Show at the end of 1989, but the factory wasn’t able to get it into production until early 1992. By that time, Ducati had become a serial winner of the World Superbike Championship with its 888 desmoquattro and was selling spin-off street models by the container load. Consequently, the Moto Guzzi Daytona 1000 never received the acclaim it deserved. Just 486 examples were built in the model’s debut year, with numbers declining to 283 bikes in 1993, 155 in 1994, and just 100 motorcycles in 1995. In 1996 the greatly revamped Daytona RS was launched, but many Guzzi customers by now preferred the less-costly pushrod 1100 Sport model of near-comparable performance. Just 113 examples…

THE BMW K100 was the surprise release of 1983: the first large-capacity BMW production motorcycle that wasn’t powered by a boxer twin, and the first to boast four cylinders, overhead cams, fuel injection and liquid cooling. But rather than mounting the engine upright or close to upright, with the crankshaft running transversely across the frame (as was the norm with four-cylinder Japanese bikes of the time), the DOHC eight-valve straight-four engine lay on its side with the crankshaft running in line with the frame on the right-hand side and the cylinder head on the left.
