While the Datograph is unrivaled in status as the iconic chronograph par excellence by A. Lange & Söhne, there are other avenues through which one can enjoy the horological expertise of the Saxon watchmaker, and at a more accessible price too. Indeed, the 1815 Chronograph is one such watch that has the dual reputation of being dubbed, perhaps unfairly, as the “poor man’s Datograph” and, more correctly, as a pure expression of what a high-end manual-winding chronograph with column wheel and horizontal clutch should be. With all the entrepreneurial prowess of his JCB-founding grandfather, George Bamford identified a considerable gap in the market in the early 2000s. It led to the launch of his watch customizing business, Bamford Watch Department (BWD). At first glance, you might think that magic and watches are two separate items, but magician Dan White was quick to emphasize that magic, from its earliest origins, has always been very mechanical. The Metropolitan Police Service “Flying Squad” can trace its origins back to the very beginning of recognizable policing in London and prides itself on being the longest-established specialist detective department in the world. It was established in 1918 by Detective Chief Inspectors Fred Wensley and Wally Hambrook who headed a Task Force of just 12 handpicked detectives with proven ability as thief-takers. Unlike their colleagues, they were given a roving commission and a vehicle which meant they were able to move around London with the same ease as the offenders they targeted. From his teenage years on, Bernhard Bulang was always interested in watches and specifically in the dials. An informal collector of early Swatch watches and other cheap models, Bulang remembers his first big-brand watch: a TAG Heuer Formula 1, which he wore surfing and when playing tennis.
