The question new sailors often ask when they first experience a sailboat heeling is, “What stops it from going all the way over?” to which the usual answer is something like: “That big lump of lead underneath us.” However, while stability lies at the very root of sailboat design, ballast is only one of the many factors that influence it. In practice, a boat’s stability is contingent on the relationship between two key factors. One is the center of gravity (CG), through which gravity exerts a downward force equal to the weight of the boat, rig and contents. Annapolis may be the sailing capital of America, but if you looked around the United States Sailboat Show last fall, you would have no choice but to conclude most sailboats are now built in Europe. The Dufour 470 is a good example of a modern French performance cruiser. DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION The Dufour 470 carries the long waterline, hard chines, nearly flush deck and broad stern that have become commonplace of late aboard European boats. Particularly arresting is the chine that runs the entire length of the hull immediately below the sheerline and the slight tumblehome it provides up at the bow, presumably to help lower the center of gravity by reducing weight well above the waterline. The Xquisite X5 Plus is a major update of the boat that SAIL awarded Best Large Multihull and Best Systems titles in 2017. The Jeanneau Yacht 60 looks like the sleek, racy, upscale vessels that populate tony Mediterranean regattas, but that low deck profile belies its tall, bright cruising interior. This is a stylish fast cruiser, not a stripped-out racer. DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION The Jeanneau 60 is actually a 57-footer with a three-foot bowsprit, but the waterline is quite long, and that is the significant performance measurement of a boat. MOODY DS 41 The latest in Moody’s DS, or “deck saloon” line, the Moody DS 41 makes possible what Moody calls “living on one level,” in which the saloon and cockpit can be easily combined into a single barrier-free living space. As a former dinghy racer, I can be hard to please when it comes to “bigger boats.” And while the 27ft Saffier SE 27 Leisure is hardly “big,” I’m always skeptical when a manufacturer says that the freedom and agility I’m used to will be found in a boat that weighs more than my car. However, the Dutch-built Saffier SE 27 was an absolute joy to sail and will give a Laser a run for its money when it comes to responsiveness, while at the same time keeping its crew a whole lot drier. Elan’s first sporty “Grand Turismo” yacht, the 43ft GT5, launched in 2017, and was actually a bit of a mashup. It combined an existing gofast hull from Elan’s sexy E5 racer with a new deck and interior optimized for cruising comfort and a somewhat detuned rig to create a modern, funtosail cruiser. In this latest offering, the veteran Slovenian builder has upscaled its GT concept to 49ft, but started with a clean slate: a new design from the ground up, with all new tooling. I’m sure many readers have heard of the dinghy test, in which it’s considered important you be able to admire your own boat as you’re dinghying ashore. Boatbuilders refresh their designs all the time, and there’s usually a new version in the same length about every 10 years. However, French catamaran builder Lagoon took its time—34 years to be exact—to bring out a new version of its classic 55-footer. When buying a boat, consider how its ratios compare with those of similar boats in its category. DISPLACEMENT-LENGTH RATIO The displacement-length ratio (D/L) is a nondimensional expression of how heavy a boat is in relation to its waterline length. A D/L is calculated by dividing a boat’s displacement in long tons (2,240lb) by one one-hundredth of the waterline length (in feet) cubed. Since the displacement in long tons can be expressed as a volume (in cubic feet of seawater), and since length-cubed is also volumetric, the D/L formula is nondimensional—the units of the numerator and the denominator are the same: feet cubed. For years, Nautitech Catamarans has been doing things differently from other production cat builders, and it seems to be paying off. When the French company launched its Open series in 2013, it shrunk the saloon and dedicated more space to the cockpit where most catamaran living takes place. The company also placed the helms outboard on the amas rather than high up on a bulkhead or flybridge. Owners loved both approaches.
